CK Mornings

It seems no matter what the weather, people try to do potentially dangerous things for the sake of social media. This time it’s the “boiling water challenge.” It was inspired by freezing temperatures during the polar vortex, and people started posting themselves trying it during the recent polar vortex. To partake you need to take a pot of boiling water outside and throw it in an arch shape over your head. If it’s cold enough it’ll turn to snow before it hits you, if not, you’ll get burned. In Chicago at least eight people between the ages of 3 and 53 were admitted to a hospital with burns after they weren’t so lucky.

There’s a college student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro whose name is Maddie.  And lately, she and her roommates have been worried they might have a GHOST in the house. Items had been disappearing, there were strange hand prints on the wall, and they heard rattling in the closet . . . you know, lots of classic ghost stuff.  So finally, on Saturday, Maddie got up the courage to open the closet and check.

The good news:  It wasn’t a ghost.  The bad news:  It was a creepy dude who’d broken into the apartment and was trying on Maddie’s clothes.

The cops came and arrested 30-year-old Andrew Swofford for breaking and entering.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A guy named Dan Laguardia was at a car dealership near San Diego last Tuesday to trade his old Scion hatchback in for a BMW.  Pretty nice upgrade.

And he noticed a younger woman named Kayla Cooper, who was also trying to buy a car . . . a much-cheaper Toyota Corolla.  But she walked out in tears.

It turns out she’s working two jobs to put herself through nursing school.  And she’s been borrowing cars from friends to get to work.  So she was hoping to get her own car, but couldn’t cover the down payment.

So after she left, Dan asked the sales guy if he still had her number.  Then he told him to call her and tell her to come back . . . because he wanted to GIVE her his trade-in.

His Scion looks like it’s probably five or 10 years old, but still in pretty good shape.  So he probably could have gotten a few thousand bucks for it.  But he decided it was worth more to her than it was to him.

When Kayla got back to the dealership, she didn’t believe it at first.  But Dan made it official . . . signed the title over . . . and gave her the keys.

He says he was happy to do what he could to help her out.  Adding, quote, “If everybody did that for everybody else, we’d be in a much better place.”

Top Ten Things We Feel Like We Don’t Get Enough Of

A recent study looked at the top things we feel like we don’t get enough of . . . and sleep is #1.  Because more sleep always sounds wonderful, right?  Or maybe I’m just old.  Here are the top 10 things we wish we got more of . . .

  1. Sleep.
  2. Vacations.
  3. Disposable Income.  Yes, more money is better than less money.
  4. Exercise.
  5. Sunlight.  (Makes sense, since 40% of us are vitamin D deficient now.)
  6. Sex.
  7. Salary.  So that means money made the list twice.
  8. Good luck.
  9. Fresh air.
  10. Fun.  Like Hawaii, right now.  And just missing out at #11 is more “me-time.”  The survey found we wish we got a minimum of 1 hour and 43 minutes of “me-time” each day, but we only get 1 hour and 15 minutes.  (Or if you’re a parent, zero.)

Five Reasons Eating Chocolate is Good for You

If you plan on diving into a pile of leftover Valentine’s Day chocolate this weekend . . . or eating your feelings because you’re tired of being single . . . here are five GOOD effects chocolate can have on the body.

  1. It has some nutrition.  A high quality dark chocolate with a high cocoa content can actually be pretty nutritious, with fiber and minerals like iron, magnesium, and potassium.  Unfortunately most of the crap you buy at the grocery store doesn’t count.

  1. It’s got antioxidants.  Raw, unprocessed cocoa beans are among the best foods when it comes to antioxidants.  And dark chocolate may even have more antioxidants than blueberries and acai berries.  (It’s pronounced ah-sah-EE.)

  1. It can make you feel better.  Chocolate increases the production of endorphins and serotonin, which can decrease pain and lift your mood.  And it also boosts the release of phenylethylamine in the body, which increases energy.

  1. It’s good for your heart.  Eating chocolate has been shown to reduce levels of “bad” cholesterol and raise levels of “good” cholesterol.  And daily chocolate consumption has been linked to a lower risk of stroke.

  1. Your brain also benefits.  A study at Harvard Medical School found that two cups of hot chocolate a day helped improve blood flow to certain parts of the brain.  And the researchers think chocolate could help in fighting some diseases, like Alzheimer’s.

FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE DELIVER ‘MOST COUNTRY’ ALBUM TO DATE

Florida Georgia Line‘s fourth studio album, Can’t Say I Ain’t Country, arrives at stores and digital retailers today (Friday, February 15th). The project includes their chart-topping hit, “Simple,” as well as their latest release, “Talk You Out of It.”

The album takes its name from the project’s second track, and while some may think Can’t Say I Ain’t Country is a statement to FGL’s haters, Brian Kelley says that’s not the case. [“It’s a bold statement until you hear the song. The song is a lot more light-hearted and fun and shows more of our personality, but it’s not necessarily a fire back or rebuttal or an answer. It’s just very necessary for us to put that out there. That’s who we are, that’s who we were, it’s who we’ll always be, and it really does round off the record nicely. It is our most country record probably, for sure, thus far. A lot of the songs have a little bit of a 90s country element, a little bit of a vibe there but there’s still something for everybody.”]

FGL head to The Ellen DeGeneres Show to perform on February 21st.

BLAKE SHELTON’S OLE RED VENUE BEING SUED OVER RED LIGHTING

Blake Shelton‘s Ole Red restaurant, bar and live music venue in downtown Nashville is being sued by the city’s Metro Historic Zoning Commission over the company’s decision to illuminate the exterior of the building in red light. According to The Tennessean, the Historic Zoning Commission passed a policy in August 2017 banning colored exterior lights in districts with historic overlays.

The Historic Zoning Commission is seeking an injunction ordering the venue to correct the lighting issue, claiming that it was only approved for white exterior lighting.

In the meantime, Blake is gearing up for his Friends & Heroes tour with special guest Lauren Alaina, along with The Bellamy Brothers, John Anderson and Trace Adkins on select dates. The tour kicks off on February 14th in Oklahoma City, OK.
