CK Mornings

➢ Ontario could be heading into another Provincial lockdown that would last 28 days. An announcement from Priemier Ford is expected later today and would take effect as of Saturday. Kids would still go to school after the Easter weekend then have their “March Break” but whether they would go back to in-school learning afterwards still hasn’t been decided.

An employee at a Goodwill in Oklahoma found $42,000 in cash hidden in some old sweaters someone donated by mistake.  And she made sure they got it back.  Her name is Andrea Lessing, and said she’s just a big believer in karma.  (Here’s an interview that ends with her being surprised with a $1,000 reward.)

An analysis of 44 recent studies of more than 9,000 seafood samples from restaurants, fishmongers and supermarkets in more than 30 countries found that 36% were mislabelled, exposing seafood fraud on a vast global scale. The UK and Canada had the highest rates of mislabeling at 40% of those tested, followed by the US at 38%. And some samples of prawn balls sold in Singapore were found to be entirely non-aquatic, containing pork and not a trace of prawn.

A runaway shopping cart with a KID in it started rolling through a parking lot in Illinois the other day.  So a quick-thinking employee named Ben Mazur broke into a sprint and snagged it right before it crossed into a busy intersection.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “April Fool’s Day”. Many say the custom of playing practical jokes today originated with the reform of the calendar when “New Year’s Day” was moved from April 1 to January 1. Those who clung to the old “New Year’s Day” were scoffed at as ‘fools’ and sent fake party invitations and prank gifts. That tradition began in France around 1564, where an ‘April Fool’ is called a ‘poisson d’avril’ (April fish).

Seven Things You Shouldn’t Be Putting in the Dishwasher

Here are seven things you shouldn’t be cleaning in the dishwasher . . .

  1. Nonstick cookware.  Dishwashing soap is more abrasive than you think, and can scratch things up.  So nonstick cookware doesn’t hold up very well in the dishwasher.

  1. Anything made of wood.  Wood can warp or crack from the heat.  Especially cutting boards.  So when they need a deep clean, scrub them with baking soda instead.

  1.  Cast iron skillets.  It ruins the “seasoning,” which is what cast iron is all about.  And it can make them rust.  So it’s better to just clean them right away with hot water.

  1. Aluminum cookware.  Even one dishwasher cycle can oxidize the metal and make them go from shiny to dull.  Also, stainless steel pans are usually okay, but it depends on the brand.

  1. Anything copper, like copper pots.  Anything made of copper, silver, or gold will tarnish in the dishwasher.  So don’t put any family heirlooms in there either.

  1. Certain plastic items.  Look for “dishwasher safe” on the label, or check with the manufacturer.  Just don’t assume anything made of plastic is dishwasher safe.  Some plastics can melt in there, or leach chemicals.

  1. Sharp knives.  The detergent dulls them over time.  And the heat can loosen the handles.  So always hand-wash them.

Four Things to Look Forward to in April

  1. In sports:  Major League Baseballgets started today . . . the Final Four is this Saturday with Baylor vs. Houston, and Gonzaga vs. UCLA . . . then the championship game is Monday . . . The Masters is next weekend . . . and the NFL Draft is April 29th.

  1. Awards season wraps up this month with the Screen Actors Guild Awardsthis Sunday . . . the BAFTAs a week later . . . and the Academy Awards April 25th.

  1. Lots of TV is on the way this month, including some new stuff:  The “Law & Order: Organized Crime”spinoff lands tonight on NBC.  Joss Whedon’s Victorian-era superhero show “The Nevers” hits HBO next weekend . . .

Jamie Foxx’s new sitcom “Dad, Stop Embarrassing Me” hits Netflix on the 14th . . . and season four of “The Handmaid’s Tale” will finally premiere on Hulu April 28th.  (The last new episode aired August 14th, 2019.)

  1. And finally, the holidays:  The big one is Good Friday and Easter Monday, which is also the last day of Passover.   . . . National Beer Day is April 7th . . . National Pet Day is the 11th . . . Wear Pajamas to Work Day is the 16th . . . Earth Day is the 22nd . . . and Arbor Day is April 30th.

GOOD NEWS

A Pastor from Japan has been working as a hospital chaplain in Minnesota, and recently asked the public to send in paper cranes to cheer people up.

He says linking 1,000 of them together is considered good luck in Japan, and helps you heal.  Now 16,000 of them are hanging from the ceiling in the front lobby.

He says visitors were always looking down at the ground when they walked in, and it seemed like a metaphor.  So he wanted to give them a reason to look up.

Past April Fools’ Day Headlines That Turned Out to Be . . . True

Today is April Fools’ Day . . . so browsing your newsfeed and social media apps CAN be a minefield, especially if you’re gullible.  But even though you SHOULD be extra skeptical today, remember:  Sometimes the things people THINK are jokes turn out to be TRUE.

Someone came up with a list of nine of them, from previous April Fools’ Days:

  1. Marvin Gaye Was Shot and Killed By His Father.  On April 1st, 1984.

The news was so shocking and the timing was so unfortunate that even Marvin’s friend Smokey Robinson thought it was a sick prank by a disc jockey.

  1. David Lee Roth Left Van Halen.  They were one of the biggest rock bands on the planet in 1985, so it’s not a surprise that when Roth announced his exit on April 1st, most fans thought it was a joke.

  1. Selena Was Killed.  Sadly, Selena was murdered on March 31st of 1995, and when the word got out the next day, fans accused radio stations of joking about it.

  1. A New “GMail” with Tons of Storage Space. On April 1st, 2004, Google announced an invitation-only beta version of a new email service, called GMail.

At the time, the idea seemed like a fantasy, Gmail offered one GIG of space, at a time when the most popular free options, Hotmail and Yahoo, were offering two and four megabytes respectively.  There are 1,000 megabytes in a gigabyte.

  1. Ashton Kutcher Playing Steve Jobs.  In 2012, Ashton was best-known for taking over for Charlie Sheenon “Two and a Half Men” and starring on “That ’70s Show”.  So it seemed suspect when the announcement was made on April 1st that he’d be playing Steve Jobs in an indie movie.

PARENTS ARE NAMING THEIR KIDS AFTER HERBS AND SPICES

Parents are fairly creative when it comes to naming their children.

They draw inspiration from all sorts of places, from TV shows to herbs and spices.

The Huffington Post looked at the most recent year of name data in the U.S., and found herbs and spices-inspired names were fairly popular:

Basil (71 boys, 28 girls), Saffron (26 girls), Sage (666 boys, 1,164 girls),

Ginger (57 Girls), Pepper (144 girls), Rosemary (760 girls), Cayenne (10 girls),

Mace (60 boys), Juniper (22 boys, 1,526 girls), Poppy (628 girls),

Lavender (114 girls), Jasmine (2,092 girls), and Angelica (508 girls).

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. Instead of “once upon a time,” Korean fairytales usually start with “In the old days, when tigers used to smoke.”

  1. When the movie “Bad Boys”was first being developed, the plan was to have Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey as the stars.  After some rewrites and changes to the film, it wound up being Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

  1. Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms, including 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices, 78 bathrooms, 514 doors and 760 windows.
  2. The expression “My bad” became popular because of the former NBA star Manute Bol.  He didn’t quite have a full grasp of English, so instead of saying “My fault” when something went wrong, he’d say “My bad.”  And that spread.

  1.   This is a Throwback Thursday from 1971.  Apollo 15 Commander David Scott did a gravity experiment ON the moon.  He dropped a feather and a hammer at the same time to see which would land first.  Listen to him do it, here.  (It was a tie.)

  1.   A woman imagined what it would be like if superheroes were REAL . . . and she was a claims representative at an insurance company.  Listen to that, here.

The Indians Are Prohibiting Fans from Dressing Up Like Indians

Today is Opening Day for baseball, and if you’re thinking of attending a Cleveland Indians game this season . . . you’ll need to leave your Native American costume and red face paint at home.

Cleveland has already announced that they’re changing their name . . . at some point in the future.  But in the meantime . . . while they’re still the Indians . . . they’re prohibiting fans from dressing like Indians.

This isn’t a shock.  The NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs did the same thing last year.

The Chiefs haven’t said anything about changing their name yet, but it’s probably inevitable.  They’ve been under increasing pressure to switch, along with the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Blackhawks

(Of course, the Washington Football Team finally gave up the name “Redskins” last year.)

CHRIS YOUNG, JIMMIE ALLEN ENJOY FISHING TRIP WITH DALLAS COWBOYS STAR DAK PRESCOTT

Chris Young and Jimmie Allen joined Dallas Cowboys star Dak Prescott, his brother Tad, and his Cowboys teammate La’el Collins on a big fishing trip in Louisiana this week. Chris shared a few pictures and a video on social media with the caption, “Shoutout to @_4dak for making this trip happen! Had entirely too much fun playing music, catching fish and getting out of town with the boys. Cheers my man!”

TMZ reports that Dak signed a four-year, $160 MIL contract with the Dallas Cowboys just weeks ago.

LADY A HOPE NEW SINGLE WILL ‘PROPEL’ THEM BACK TO TOURING

Hillary Scott co-wrote Lady A‘s new single, “Like A Lady,” and the second she shared it with her fellow bandmates Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, it was a done deal. Dave tells us: [“Hillary sent that to Charles and I. I mean, immediately I was transported to the stage, the summer amphitheaters we get to do in country music and we all love and I think this is the song that that is hoping to propel us towards, you know, kind of the end of the pandemic and getting, you know, some positive music out there to kind of let us start getting ready for buying tickets and getting ready for shows. Again, that’s our hope. You know, we’re we’re waiting for a green light for that. But if we’re able to do that, we’re hoping this song will be the one that’ll kind of get us there.”]

“Like A Lady” will be included on Lady A’s upcoming album.

CODY JOHNSON ‘HONORED’ TO BE NOMINATED FOR ACM NEW MALE ARTIST – (03/25/2021)

Cody Johnson didn’t have to share the exciting news of his ACM Awards nomination for New Male Artist of the Year with his friends because they already knew. In fact, they’re the ones who filled him in on the news. Cody tells us: [“I didn’t break the news to anyone about being an ACM nominee, because the news was broken to me! I didn’t really know, and my phone blew up, and that’s how I found out about it. So, I figured everybody already kind of knew, and I’m not one to brag on stuff. It was kind of cool to share with my wife, ‘Hey look, I just got this text message’ and very honored to be nominated.”]

Cody’s fellow nominees in the New Male Artist category include Hardy, Jimmie Allen, Parker McCollum and Travis Denning. The winner will be announced during the ACM Awards in Nashville on Sunday, April 18th on CBS.

LUKE BRYAN UPDATE

We were all a little grossed out yesterday with LUKE BRYAN’s video of those two fishing lure prongs that were stuck in his hand.  He took it like a champ, though.  He shared an update on his Instagram stories of what he did next.

He and his guitar tech, Russ, drove to a medical center, and on the way Luke called himself out for screwing things up.  Quote, “Leave it to me, I ruined the fishing trip.  But we’ll be back on the water in about 25 minutes.”

Then he shared video of a medical worker extracting a hook from his hand.

And then, true to his word, he did an update AFTER they returned to the water.  He held up his newly-repaired thumb and said, quote, “Got the hook out.  We’re back!”
