CK Mornings

➢ Elly Shariat spoke only Farsi when she moved to the US from Iran as a young girl. But when her father introduced her to “Jeopardy!” her world opened up. She learned to pronounce words that appeared on screen. Her dad even paid her 25 cents when she got answers right. For millions  Alex Trebek felt like one of the family.

And in an episode that aired this month, Burt Thakur wiped tears from his eyes as he thanked Trebek for teaching him English.

“My grandfather, who raised me … I used to sit on his lap and watch you every day,” Thakur said at the end of the episode after he’d netted over $20,000. “So it’s a pretty special moment for me man.”

➢ One day after his 64th birthday, a COVID-19 patient in Iowa just went home after 99 days in the hospital.  That includes six weeks in quarantine in the ICU before he tested negative.  His wife says the nurses who took care of him are all heroes.

➢ A weird thing is happening in Akita City, Japan. Authorities there say back in 2014 they would get phantom calls from empty homes way out in the mountains late at night, but once fire trucks arrived they would find the home closed up and nobody home.

However, since May 2020 there have been many cases of phones seeming calling 1-1-9 (their version of 9-1-1) by themselves all across the city.

There’s been no definite explanation found, but the fire chief inspector believes it could be due to rotary telephones being used that have yet to be updated to touch tone phones, though even that doesn’t explain why it’s been happening more lately than ever before.

➢ A new survey found almost everyone who’s made or built something in quarantine thinks it’s good enough to give as a gift this Christmas.

And 85% who’ve made something said they WILL give at least one of their creations away as a present this year.  So what kind of stuff should you expect?

The top items we’ve made or created while stuck at home include baked goods . . . artwork . . . photo albums . . . and things you knit, like sweaters and blankets.

➢ The three greatest “Jeopardy” players are coming together again. James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings, and Brad Rutter will star in ABC’s “The Chase”, a new quiz show pitting contestants against the Jeopardy greats in a fast-paced trivia contest. The trio will take turns serving as the ‘Chaser’, the show’s resident quiz genius, who attempts to stop contestants from winning cash prizes. Each hour long episode, hosted by The View’s Sara Haines, will see three competitors attempting to answer up to 166 questions across all topics. No premiere date has been set.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Fast Food Day”, a day when we’re encouraged to celebrate by going out to our favorite fast food joint.

Six Household Items You Might Need to Replace

When’s the last time you replaced your pillows?  If it was before 2018, you’re probably sleeping on a nice, soft mound of FILTH.  At least according to this . . .

Someone asked a bunch of experts how often you need to replace different household items.  And ideally, you should replace your pillows every year or two.  Here are six more things you might need to replace . . .

  1. Fire extinguishers.  Most rechargeable ones need a recharge every five or six years.  And the disposable kind need to be replaced after 12 years.

  1. Smoke detectors.  Even if they still work, replace them every 10 years, because they lose sensitivity.  And carbon monoxide detectors should go after five to seven years.

  1. First-aid kits.  You might not need to replace everything in it.  But check the expiration dates.  Some of the stuff in there expires after three to five years.

  1. Your kitchen sponge.  It depends on how much you use it.  But in general, open a new one every two weeks.

  1. Your toothbrush.  Every three to four months.  Or sooner if the bristles look matted or frayed.  They don’t remove as much plaque after that.

  1. The loofah in your shower.  Every three months, or it’ll end up covered in bacteria.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. Only four artists have ever had three number one albums in the same year:  The Beatles. . . The Kingston Trio . . . The Monkees . . . and . . . wait for it . . . the cast of “Glee”.

  1. Giraffes sleep for less than two hours a day.  Pythons sleep for at least 18 hours.

  1. Google was originally called BackRub, when they came up with the idea in 1996.  The founders changed the name to Google about a year later.

  1. One pound (454g) of coffee makes about 50 cups of coffee; One pound of tea leaves makes about 300 cups of tea.

GOOD NEWS

There’s a couple in Lakeview, Michigan that has 14 SONS.  And on Thursday, they had their 15th child . . . and it’s a GIRL.

45-year-old Kateri Schwandt and her husband, 45-year-old Jay Schwandt, had their daughter Maggie on Thursday.

Yes, they’re 45 and have 15 kids.  Their oldest is 28, which means they had him after they got married right out of high school.  They had three sons by the time they were done with college . . . but they both still went on to get advanced degrees.

There’s no word on whether they’re planning on having any more kids, or if this daughter is FINALLY their license to stop.

DOG’S BREAKFAST:
Don’t bug out, but here’s the latest in pet food: Purina is launching a new line of dog and cat foods that they say is more eco-friendly than typical meat-based kibbles.

Starting this month, the company will sell “insect-based” Purina Beyond Nature’s Protein in Switzerland. In a release, Nestle, which owns Purina, said that the insect protein comes from black soldier fly larvae, which is already in use in animal feed in Europe.

They say the feed, which also includes millet and fava beans, provides protein, energy and fiber to aid digestion. The company claims they’ve seen “increasing demand for diversified sources of proteins for pet food products”.

Many scientists have long promoted eating bugs as a sustainable food option – not just for pets, but for humans, too.
