➢ The 30th Ig Nobel Prize awards were just handed out.  Those are awards that are given to the most ridiculous advances in science.  This year’s included a study on whether knives made out of frozen human poop would be effective weapons…- they weren’t- how to tell if someone is a narcissist by their eyebrows, and one on how helium affects an alligator’s voice.

One of the authors of the alligator study inhaled some helium, then explained how the study worked.

➢ You never know what you’ll find in the walls of an old house. Jenna Walden was doing demolition during a renovation of her home in Seattle, Washington when she found a secret supply of alcohol hidden in the walls. Walden says material found on the 30 or so bottles makes her think they may date back to the prohibition era, possibly 1933.

She says many of the bottles look like repurposed household item bottles—such as ketchup bottles. Walden hosted a tasting party and believes the wall contained a variety of ciders and brandy, as the drinks had a strong vinegar taste.

➢ A driver in Alberta was pulled over for napping while his self-driving car sped down the highway at more than 85mph. Police claim the two occupants of the Tesla were completely reclined in their seats and asleep while the car was driving.

The Tesla was eventually pulled over and police charged the driver, a 20-year-old man from British Columbia with speeding and dangerous driving. Authorities said in a news release that although these modern cards have built in safety systems, “They are not self-driving systems, they still come with the responsibility of driving.”

➢ Ryan Reynolds poked fun at his friend and fellow actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson over his latest feat of Instagram strength. Johnson posted a photo of his driveway gate ripped off its hinges and cast aside, explaining that he did this with his “bare hands” because the gate would not function due to a power shortage and “a man’s gotta go to work”. Reynolds’ cheeky response? “The gate opened the OTHER way.” The two co-starred in last year’s “Hobbs & Shaw”.

➢ Buzzfeed released a list of “Behind-The-Scenes Facts About Popular Songs.”  One amusing fact is, Dolly Parton used her acrylic nails as a sound effect while recording “9 to 5”.  She said, “They make noise, and it kind of sounded like a typewriter to me.  And I played it on the actual record . . . it says ‘Nails by Dolly’ on the album.”

TODAY IS……………….

  • “International Day of Sign Languages”, according to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are approximately 72 million deaf people worldwide. More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages.

1994 [26] “The Shawshank Redemption”, starring Morgan Freeman & Tim Robbins, opens in movie theaters (still on many film fans’ all-time favorite list)

The Five Foods You Should Never Reheat in the Microwave

Some foods don’t do well in the microwave.  Here are the five things you should never put in there, along with the BEST way to reheat each one . . .

  1. Pizza.  If it’s one or two slices, reheat them in pan on the stove over medium heat.  It’s better than the microwave, because the crust gets crispy.  If it’s a lot of pizza, put it in the oven at 375 until the cheese looks nice and melted again.

  1. Fried chicken.  Instead of the microwave, use a baking sheet or a pan.  Cover it with foil, and cook it in the oven at 375 for about 10 minutes.  Then remove the foil and keep cooking it until the skin gets crispy again.

  1. French fries.  They’ll never taste as good as they were fresh.  But the best way to do it is in a pan with oil.  Once they’re hot, put them on a plate that’s lined with paper towels to soak up the oil.  And sprinkle some extra salt on if you want.

  1. Spaghetti.  Just toss it in a pot and cook it over medium heat.  If it’s too thick, add a little bit of water and some seasoning.

  1. Steak.  First, slice it up thin.  Then just add oil to a pan and cook it over medium until it’s hot enough.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

✓ Teachers originally did not want pencils to have erasers because it was believed it would encourage children to make mistakes.

✓ The crayon ranks #18 on the list of most recognizable scents, according to a Yale study.

✓ Before the school calendar became national, students in rural areas of the US went from December to March and May to August so kids could be home for spring planting and fall harvesting. In urban centers, kids were given the hot summer off to prevent the spread of disease.

✓ In Chile, students are given 12 weeks off from mid-December to early March. German children? Just 6 weeks.

GOOD NEWS

A three-year-old in Toronto named Wolfgang “Wolfy” Reader is obsessed with garbage trucks.

He only got to invite two people to his birthday this month because of social distancing.

And he chose the two trash collectors who handle his route, so they went above and beyond for him.

They brought four trucks to his house and blared the horns.  Then they hung out in the front yard and gave him his own uniform.

ESCAPED BEEFALO ELUDES TRAPPING ATTEMPTS IN CONNECTICUT

Ever heard of a beefalo? It turns out it’s a hybrid of a bison and a domestic cow. Now police in Plymouth, Connecticut have shared a video of a beefalo that escaped from a slaughterhouse more than a month ago as it nearly walks into a trap set by police twice before ultimately deciding not to go inside. They say Buddy the beefalo escaped from a trailer outside the Plymouth Meats processing facility on August 3rd, and has been on the loose ever since. Police have warned members of the public to keep a safe distance from the “aggressive” hybrid animal. They add that efforts to capture Buddy are still underway, and that the animal will eventually be taken to a new home at the Critter Farm Sanctuary in Gainesville, Florida.

DEADLY SNAKE FOUND WRAPPED AROUND GAS PUMP IN AUSTRALIA

We imagine this would discourage you from driving. Raymond Hoser is an Australian snake catcher and says he was recently summoned to a gas station in Victoria to find a deadly tiger snake wrapped around a gas pump. Tiger snakes are considered dangerous due to their potent venom and aggressive disposition. Hoser wrote on Facebook about capturing the animal, noting, “Yes deadly tiger snakes like this ripper specimen have been hitching rides in cars and turning up in weird places this week.”

IN LINE OR ONLINE:
With stay-at-home orders, self-isolation and general concern about contracting the coronavirus, many people have made the move to ordering their groceries online rather than donning a mask and heading down the aisles of their local grocery store.

But experts are saying that convenience comes at a cost. Sylvain Charlebois, director of Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab has calculated that online purchasing of groceries costs on average 5-7% more than grocery shopping in person.

Why? According to Jeremy Bradley, author of The Official Guide to Being a Winnipeg Cheapskate, if someone else is picking out your grocery items for you, they won’t keep an eye out for better deals, particularly in the produce aisle.

An employee of the store tasked with picking grocery orders is also unlikely to ask the produce clerk or manager for a mark-down on almost-expired items, nor will they take advantage of coupons available in-store.

For shoppers looking to save, Bradley suggests an app that can price-match items, like Flipp or Flashfood.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23RD

  1. The Denver Nuggets downed the L.A. Lakers 114-106 last night (September 22nd) to cut the Lakers’ lead in the Western Conference finals to 2 games to 1. Game 4 is on Thursday.

Two more head coaches and their teams have been fined by the NFL for not wearing face masks on the sidelines during games. Media reports yesterday (September 22nd) said that Jon Gruden of the Las Vegas Raiders and Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints were each fined $100,000 for not wearing masks Monday night. The teams were also fined $250,000.

Similar fines were reportedly handed out a day earlier to the Denver Broncos’ Vic Fangio, the Seattle Seahawks’ Pete Carroll and the San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan for not wearing masks on Sunday.

  1. In huge gamer news, Microsoft/Xbox boughtone of the most successful game making companies, ZeniMax Media for 7.5 billion dollars.  Their division of Bethesda Softworks makes games like Skyrim, Fallout, and Doom.  This means that soon those games, and others, will be exclusive to Xbox.  Here’s Microsoft’s Head of Xbox Phil Spencer on what’s on the way.

  1. A town outside Asheville, North Carolina normally throwsa Bigfoot festival in September, but had to cancel it this year.  So they’re doing a Bigfoot-themed scavenger hunt instead.  A tourism official talked about it and referred to Bigfoot as the “social distance champion of the world.”

  1. Dave Chappelle.  Most people think he’s from the hood, but he’s not.  He’ll explain.  (From his 2017 Netflix special, “Equanimity”)

Deion Sanders Is the New Coach of Jackson State

DEION SANDERS has been named the new head coach of the Jackson State Tigers . . . a Division 1 school out of Mississippi, which competes in the FCS.  Their last winning season came in 2013.

Jackson State is hoping Deion puts them on the map with recruits . . . and that circus seems to be underway.

Deion has been asked to be called “Coach Prime” . . . a reference to his Prime Time nickname . . . and there was plenty of fanfare for his arrival.

A local reporter Tweeted that Deion is even adding a few SUPERSTARS to his coaching staff:  TERRELL OWENS as his wide receivers coach and WARREN SAPP as his defensive line coach. There was another rumor that BRETT FAVRE would be his new quarterbacks coach.  Which would be WILD if it were true . . . but it’s not.

Deion denied it on Twitter, calling it “ABSOLUTELY WRONG.”

Yesterday, Coach Prime said his coaching staff has been “established for quite some time . . . for the last several months.”  And added, quote, “That staff . . . has 84 years combined of NFL coaching and playing experience.” So it won’t be Brett, Terrell, and Warren, but it sounds like Deion is tapping some of his connections from the NFL.  The announcement is expected next month. By the way, the Tigers’ season won’t begin until the SPRING due to COVID-19.

DAN + SHAY RELEASE LIVE RECORDING, VIDEO OF LATEST HIT

Dan + Shay have released a brand-new version of their latest single “I Should Probably Go To Bed,” and it’s currently available everywhere.  While they’re working on new music, Dan tells us EXCLUSIVELY that he’s not sure if the duo will be ready to release an album this year or wait and let it coincide with the next tour. [“I think right now we’re just taking it one step at a time. You know, we’re using all of this excess time that we have on our hands to really dive in and focus on what’s important and that’s each song, and this one, we really spent a lot of time getting all the details right on it, so I think whatever we do next will be the same attention to detail and whether that wraps up into an album sometime this year I’m not sure yet. We’re kind of just taking it one day at a time. All I know is we’re super fired up about this one and it feels good to like have a little bit of purpose again, you know — get a song out there in the world and have something to look forward to.”]

“I Should Probably Go To Bed” has already accumulated 45 million global streams.
