CK Mornings

➢  A 59-year-old from Texas named Don Muchow just became the first person to run the 2,761 miles from Disneyland to Disney World.  He has type-1 diabetes, and said he did it to show other people with diabetes that they can “still dream big.”  He had no idea, but a huge crowd was waiting to cheer him on at the finish line.

➢  British people are very serious about their tea, and now science has something to add to their tea conversation. Professor Alan Mackie with Leeds University says he’s found that pouring milk on a tea bag before adding the boiling water is the way to get the best-tasting tea. He says this is particularly important if the person making the tea lives in a region that has hard water, as proteins in the milk lower the mineral content of the water, creating a better flavor. Many on social media clapped back at the finding, calling it “appalling” and “balderdash”.

➢  During a virtual presentation about the opening of Disney parks, an exec showed off the lightsaber, turned it on, and said, quote, “It’s real.”  Then the video ended.

Later in the day, a Disney creative boss said, quote, “A lot of questions today about whether the lightsaber that [was] revealed today was real or CGI, and, whether I’d share photos or video.  Yes it was/is really real, and . . . not yet.”

There’s no word where, when, or how this thing is going to be used, but since it was unveiled during a presentation on the Disney parks, maybe it’ll be something you actually get to play with. Which would suggest that while they turn on and off like the ones in the movies, they probably DON’T cut people in half.

➢  A 22-year-old entrepreneur has created a business that he feels serves an important purpose during these times of COVID-driven disarray. Cameron Banville started The Bong Cleaners, his mobile bong-cleaning business, in Ottawa, ON, last July. He decided to launch it after learning to clean his own bongs, then being asked by friends to do the same to theirs. He charges $15 per bong and says he caters to people who like to smoke, but find cleaning their equipment “dirty and nasty” work.  According to Banville, when he turns their blackened bongs into glistening glass, “people say, ‘Wow, that’s crazy.’ ”

TODAY IS……………….

GOOD NEWS

Someone has been leaving uplifting handwritten notes all over Toronto.

The new initiative, called Greetings Toronto, was founded by a Toronto resident and her two childhood friends — all of whom have asked to have their names withheld to keep in line with the anonymous nature of the project.

One of the founders said she was inspired by uplifting messages on social media that she found.

As soon as she noticed the positive effects of these affirmations, she says she immediately felt the urge to find a way to brighten other people’s days with uplifting messages as well.

The founder says they’ve chosen to mostly leave the notes at highly visited areas around the city including secluded benches and crowded bus stops.

So far, the founder says they’ve received tons of love, support and gratitude from people around the city in response to the initiative.

One woman who recently moved to Canada from Brazil even reached out to express that she had been having a hard time starting over and finding one of these notes made her day.

SCIENCE NEWS

  1. A study at UCLA found babies love it when we use “baby talk.”  Especially in English, because English speakers tend to exaggerate it the most.  Meanwhile, a study in Scotland found babies can understand real wordsearlier than we thought.  And well before they can talk, they can already grasp simple phrases like, “clap your hands.”

  1. Scientists in Japan figured out how to hack the human body and regrow teeth.  Don’t stop brushing yet though.  They say it could be years before they can actually do it.

  1. And in other space news:  The Mars rover deployed its helicopter, which could make its first flight this week.  Experts say stronger tides from this week’s “supermoon” helped free the ship that was stuckin the Suez Canal.  And for the first time . . . astronomers have detected X-rays coming from Uranus.

  1. A photo of a “worm tornado” went viral this week after hundreds of worms started crawling in a circle during a rainstorm in New Jersey.  Experts know they sometimes crawl around together to help each other navigate.  But no one knows why they went in a circle this time.

And speaking of tornadoes, a meteorologist at KTVE in El Dorado, Arkansas went off on viewers who were complaining about their shows being interrupted . . . even though there was a severe tornado warning in the area.  Listen to that, here.

DID YOU KNOW?
A tire startup has teamed up with NASA to develop the world’s first space-age alloy bicycle tires that never go flat, and could last a lifetime.

The SMART Tire Company has announced their innovative airless bicycle tire originally developed by NASA for Mars Rover missions.

The revolutionary tire, named “METL,” is made from smart memory metal that rearranges its molecular structure when bent, but instantly goes back to its original shape. It has the flexibility of rubber but is as strong as titanium, which means that you probably won’t have to change another bicycle tire in your lifetime

ERIC CHURCH CREATED 24-HOUR RULE FOR WRITING, RECORDING NEW MUSIC

Eric Church once again shook things up with respect to the writing and recording process for his upcoming three-part project, Heart & Soul. He invited various songwriters to join him in the mountains of North Carolina for a month-long session during which he wrote/co-wrote and recorded a song from start to finish each day in an effort to push the limits of creativity for everyone involved. [“When I invited these people to come up — I want people to understand the process – so, I committed to I will get up in the morning and we’re going to write a song or create a piece of work that we are going to record that night, and then we’re going to do it again and again and again. And I think that there’s something about the commitment to the 24-hour period and then the forget-ability of the next period that made this work.”]

The first release, Heart, will be available on April 16th. He created the middle album of the trilogy, &, specifically for the Church Choir (his fan club), which will be available exclusively to them only as a vinyl record on April 20th. The third installment, Soul, is set for release April 23rd.

But every once in a while, they’ll kind of throw in like a chorus or something of some hymn that I grew up with and there’s an immediate sense of home when I hear that. It should be like a warm hug, and I feel like there’s so many people that are like me that kind of long for that.”]
