CK Mornings

➢ If you look to the skies this Saturday – Halloween you’ll see a rare Blue Moon. The full moon won’t actually look blue, but is called a Blue Moon because it is the second full moon to appear in the same month—the first appeared on October 1st. This phenomenon takes place seven times every 19 years, so the next time they’ll be a Blue Moon on Halloween will be the year 2039. This special full moon will be visible all across the globe, which hasn’t happened since 1944. In the year 2020 there will be a total of 13 full moons, which is also remarkable, as most years only have 12.

➢For most people a speeding ticket is bad, for this guy, it’s really bad. Police in Orangeville, Ontario pulled over a man for speeding on Tuesday (October 20th) but when they checked his license they found he had previously been issued eight separate lifetime driving bans. Police say the 60-year-old now faces charges of operating a vehicle while prohibited, driving under suspension, speeding, use of plate not authorized for vehicle, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

➢ Singapore boasts a network of ATMs that dispense – salmon. Manish Kumar, founder and CEO of Norwegian Salmon Pte Ltd, says his goal is to make salmon available and affordable for everyone. By cutting out the cost of storefronts, staff, and distributors, he’s able to sell his 200-gram fillets from the fjords of Norway for the equivalent of US $4.25. The company decided on Singapore because of the country’s vending-machine culture. In the city-state, machines vend everything from ice cream to luxury cars.

➢That’s one big gourd. A Massachusetts man says a prize item from his garden might earn an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. Steve Connolly says he grew a 470.5-pound bushel gourd. He adds that he’s been growing giant pumpkins for about 30 years and started working on growing massive bushel gourds about four years ago. The current Guinness record holder is for a 380-pound, 8-ounce gourd grown in Tennessee in 2018.

➢The holiday tradition of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas rock show is coming up, but instead of them playing major concert venues around the country, this year they’ll do a live-streamed event.   Here’s guitarist and founding member of TSO, Al Pitrelli, on how we can all share the concert together.  (The show will only cost $30 to view.  Tickets are on sale now at Trans-Siberian.com.  The concert can be viewed 48 hours after the original broadcast.  That’s how most streamed concerts are doing it now.)

Five Things That Might Be Sold Out Way Before the Holidays This Year

We’re still a few days away from Halloween, but let’s talk about Christmas for a minute.

Because this isn’t a normal year . . . and if we’ve learned anything in the last few months, it’s that sometimes it’s good to plan ahead.

Here are five things that are probably going to be in high demand for the holidays this year, so you should seriously consider picking them up NOW, before they sell out . . .

  1. Fitness equipment.  There was a run on things like treadmills and kettlebells early during the pandemic when gyms shut down.  And those things might still be hard to find as the weather gets cooler and people start working out inside their house more.

  1. Puzzles and board games.  They’ve been an easy and fun way to keep yourself and your family entertained while few events are going on.

  1. Nintendo Switch.  It was already a hot gift BEFORE the pandemic, and the lockdowns this year just made it even more popular.  If you think you might want to get a Switch for a Christmas gift this year, you should scoop it up as soon as you see it in stock somewhere.

  1. Yarn and craft supplies.  People have more time on their hands these days, so they’ve been stocking up on yarn and other crafting supplies.  Which means if you’re planning to make some handmade holiday gifts, you should buy early.

  1. Spices.  There was a big increase in demand earlier this year when we started cooking at home more.  But fall and winter are also a big time for spices, and there could be disruptions in the supply chain around the globe.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1. A “mulligan” became a do-over in golf because of a guy named David Mulligan in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in the 1920s.  He hit a bad shot, then he decided to try it over again, so his friends called started calling that move a “Mulligan.”

  1. “Friends”is the most popular show that people in other countries watch to help themselves learn English.  “The Simpsons” is number two.

  1. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin’smother’s maiden name was Moon.

  1. A chimp’s POOP THROWING ABILITY is actually a sign of intelligence.  The more accurately the chimp throws his feces, the stronger his brain.

GOOD NEWS

A guy in Idaho celebrated his birthday last week in a generous way.

He sent some of his employees to a grocery store with $5,000, and had them pay for random people’s groceries.  He wanted to do it quietly, but the local news tracked him down.

They talked to one woman he bought groceries for, and one of the employees he sent to do it.  (His employee said the #1 rule he gave them was they couldn’t boast about it, so it felt weird talking about it at all.)

A Guy Stops in the Middle of a Police Chase to Fill Up with Gas

Getting into a police chase definitely burns through gas . . . even if you’re getting your highway and not city mileage.  So I guess it was inevitable this would happen one day?

On Tuesday afternoon, a guy allegedly shoplifted from a Home Depot in Glendora, California.  And he sped off when the cops came . . . so a classic southern California police chase was ON.

But this one had a twist.

At one point, the guy pulled into a gas station to fill up.  And he even ran into the station to pay.

He filled up with a little gas before the police could get there . . . and then he took off again.  He drove for more than an HOUR after that until he finally pulled into a parking garage near downtown Los Angeles and ran off on foot.

There’s no word on whether the cops ever wound up catching him.

A Couple’s First Date Ends in a Police Chase and an Arrest

A guy named Brandon Hembree from Tulsa, Oklahoma met a woman on a dating app this week and they went out on Wednesday night.

But as they were driving, a cop tried to pull them over.  And . . . Brandon SPED off.

So the first date turned into a high-speed police chase, which only ended after Brandon blew through some stop signs and decided to finally pull over.

It turns out he had an outstanding warrant for five traffic and drug cases.  And now he’s also facing more charges including eluding and obstructing an officer.

The cops let his date go.  She said she didn’t know he was wanted and, we’re assuming, there’s not going to be a second date.

GET WELL SOONER:
While children who have their tonsils removed sure enjoy the fact that they can look forward to lots of ice cream, researchers in Australia say a procedure that focuses on shrinking tonsils instead of completely cutting them out causes less pain and reduces bleeding risks.

The 10-year study at Flinders University found a “tonsillotomy” can cut recovery times in half, to about 4.6 days, and patients are three times less-likely to bleed compared to full surgery.

Why? A full tonsillectomy exposes the muscles of the throat. But by removing just 90-95% of the tonsil, a small crescent of tissue is left intact, allowing for less pain and bleeding.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 27TH

  1. The Los Angeles Rams downed the Chicago Bears 24-10 at home last night (October 26th) in a game dominated by their defense. Rams quarterback Jared Goff threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays will meet in Game 6 of the World Series tonight (October 27th), with L.A., leading 3 games to 2 and eyeing a championship win, and the Rays hoping to force a Game 7. The Dodgers haven’t won the World Series since 1988, and the Rays have yet to win one, after losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in their only previous trip to the championship series in 2008.

  1. A student in Indiana is lucky to be alive after someone dropped a pumpkinoff an overpass.  It went through his windshield, but luckily, it was on the passenger side where no one was sitting.

  1. Purple pumpkins are a trendthis year.  If you see a picture of one hanging in a window, it means they’re handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, and taking precautions when it comes to the virus.

  1. Here’s comedian Maria Bamford, looking back on how she used to skip out of work.

THEFT FROM CONAN O’BRIEN’S STUDIO

Conan O’Brien returned from vacation, and to doing shows in the historic Largo Theater in Los Angeles, only to find that some of their equipment got robbed.

Here’s Conan kicking off his show last night, trying to make light of yet another setback for the show.  (He joked that those slate clap-boards are available from any store on Hollywood Boulevard.  From “Conan” on Monday, October 26, 2020.  Conan began doing shows at the Largo, without a live audience, in July, during the pandemic.)

DIERKS BENTLEY RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘GONE’

Dierks Bentley has a brand new single at radio this week called “Gone.” He recently recorded the song and tells us it sums up a lot about 2020. [“When it came time to go cut some stuff this song kind of rose to the top and I gravitated towards it because I love the title, I love a good classic country word play — you know, ‘ever since you left I’ve been gone,’ but he actually hasn’t gone anywhere. I feel like I’ve been gone, I feel like we’ve all been gone. I feel like country music in 2020 is just gone, so it touches on a little bit of the idea of what’s been going on here with COVID but it does in a metaphorical way through a relationship.”]

Dierks will perform “Gone” for the first time during the 2020 iHeartCountry Festival which will be livestreamed tonight (Friday, Oct. 23rd) at 8 p.m. ET.

Jason Aldean Wants to Dress Up as Joe Exotic for Halloween

In a recent interview, JASON ALDEAN said the pandemic has put him in “weird place.”  He’s used to jumping on his tour bus every Wednesday . . . doing a bunch of shows . . . and then coming home on Sunday. But there are benefits to being home all the time.  He enjoys going to his kids’ ballgames, and he loves putting them to bed at night.  There’s also a lot more time to space-out in front of the TV.

Quote, “We’re big binge-watchers.  [Brittany] talked me into watching ‘Love Island’ which I love, like, crappy reality shows.”

They also fell under the spell of “Joe Exotic” . . . so when he was asked what he’d like to dress up as this Halloween, that’s where he went.

Quote, “One of my ideas was for me to go as Joe Exotic, her to go as Carole Baskin, and then the two kids as tigers.  So, we’ll see how that works out.  I’ll see what she comes up with, that’s my idea.”
