➢ BILL NYE posted a pair of TikTok videos where he uses a candle to show how effective face masks are. He tries to blow out the flame from a foot away while wearing a disposable mask . . . a cloth mask . . . and an N95. And he can’t do it. The only time it goes out is when he tries it with a scarf.
➢ A Michigan library had to put out a PSA instructing patrons to avoid microwaving their books. The regional manager of the Library in Grand Rapids, MI said she thinks people are attempting to cook their books in order to rid them of Covid germs. In order to deter people from this practice, she posted images of scorched texts on Facebook with the following caption, “Reminder that we will quarantine returned materials for 72 hours. The pictures below show what will happen, when you try microwaving a book. The radio frequency tags have metal in them. They will catch on fire in the microwave.”
➢ A bidet company is offering the ultimate summer job opportunity to someone who doesn’t want to leave the house for work. TUSHY is offering 10,000 for their new Vice President of Fecal Matter. The right candidate needs to be able to document and analyze their daily movements and post their findings on social media. Those hoping to score the three-month gig must submit a video application before the July 10th deadline.
➢ A retired Sault Ste. Marie electrician learned he was a six-figure lottery winner when a friend returned a jacket that held the winning ticket.
Jose Lima, 69, won $100,000 playing Encore on a Lotto 6/49 draw last September.
He found the ticket when his jacket was returned.
Lima used the cash to buy a camp “where he can spend his leisure time and relax, unwind and spend his time boating,’ a release says.
➢ Patrick Mahomes’ $500 million contract won’t allow him to have much fun off the football field. There’s a long list of things he can’t do like ride Jet Skis or play basketball or baseball. He said he’s sticking to football and video games.

Kids Today Make a Different Hand Gesture to Pretend They’re on the Phone
If you grew up in the ’90s or earlier and you wanted to use your hand to pretend you’re on the phone, you’d stick out your thumb and pinky and hold your hand up to your face to mimic a phone handset.
Well guess what, grandma? Today’s kids have no idea why you’re doing that.
There’s a TikTok video going viral where a dad asks both of his kids what hand gesture they’d use to pretend they were on a phone call, and both of them held their palm up flat to the side of their head to mimic a smartphone.
At least they didn’t say, “What’s a phone call?”
The video has more than 275,000 likes already . . . and it’s getting a lot of comments from adults who are VERY thrown by it.

An 11-year-old girl in Houston has been running a nonprofit called Lily’s Toy Box that sends toys to kids who need them. She started it three years ago after Hurricane Harvey. But now she’s sending them to the kids of first responders.
A nurse in Chile has been taking care of COVID-19 patients around the clock. But two days a week, she still sticks around after work to play her violin for them

NEW TRICK ABOUT OLD DOGS:
The most popular method of calculating your dog’s age in “human years” is to multiply his age by 7. But researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have developed a new formula that takes into account the fact that dogs and humans don’t age at the same rate. In tracking dogs’ DNA, they found that dogs age at a much faster rate than humans early in their lives, then slow down after reaching maturity. Their new formula for calculating a dog’s age in human terms is this:
Multiply the natural logarithm of a dog’s age by 16, then add 31. That makes a 2-year old dog 42 in human terms, rather than 14 using the usual method. A 5-year-old dog is approximately a 57-year-old human, while a 6-year-old dog is nearing 60 in human years—a minor difference. Things level out as the dog gets much older, with a 10-year-old dog nearing a 70-year-old human.
While this formula isn’t completely accurate for every breed, as different dogs age at different rates, it probably beats the old, unscientific 7-year rule.

Berlin Hoping BO Will Encourage Proper Mask Usage
Public transportation officials in Berlin have issued a recommendation for riders to stop wearing deodorant and let their natural odors waft through the shared air — so that others will fully cover their mouths and noses with masks.
“Given that so many people think they can wear their masks under their noses, we’re getting tough,” the BVG transportation operator tweeted in the online ad that is now going viral.
Similar to a no-smoking sign, the image shows a red circle and a slash over a person spraying deodorant into their right armpit.
“You leave us no choice,” a translation of the tweet reads. In Germany, covering both the mouth and nose are required on public transportation and in shops — and those who don’t comply have to cough up big fines.
But commuters can sometimes be seen wearing the coverings just over their mouths. “So, now do you still want to have your nose out?” one of the new warnings reads.
NO SLURPEE DAY
7-11 has canceled this year’s “Free Slurpee Day”. The convenience store chain’s annual celebration of their signature icy confection has been celebrated every 7/11 (get it?) since 2002, when customers are invited to bring their own containers…sometimes using empty KFC buckets or plastic Halloween pumpkins, to test the limits of what ‘free’ means. Sadly, Free Slurpee Day has been called off this year to discourage people from gathering in stores and potentially spreading or contracting the coronavirus.

- It sounds like NAYA RIVERA picked a dangerous spot to go boating. Lake Piru, which is just outside Los Angeles, has apparently seen its share of drownings.
A former parks & rec manager there says he saw 12 during his 23 years there, thanks to a combination of chilly temperatures that can overwhelm swimmers, and winds that are often strong enough to tip a small boat.
Sadly, Naya is presumed dead at this point. Authorities have switched their mission from “rescue” to “recovery”. Naya’s 4-year-old son Josey told investigators that they had been swimming in the lake, and he got back into the boat, but she didn’t. They don’t know WHY, of course. It could have been an accident or some kind of medical episode.
- Disney World in Orlando is still planning to re-opentomorrow, even as virus cases skyrocket in Florida.
This is definitely one way for tourist destinations to get people to come back. A campsite in Tarragona, Spain is offering virus tests on-site to all guests, so they can make sure everyone inside is healthy and no one will need masks or distancing.
- A woman had a meltdownat a Skechers outlet in Oklahoma after being told to wear a mask. She threw shoeboxes at an employee and then left the store. It didn’t take police long to identify her . . . she left her wallet on the counter.

Major League Soccer announced yesterday (July 9th) that Nashville SC had pulled out of the MLS is Back tournament after nine players tested positive for Covid 19. They’re the second team to withdraw from the tournament with FC Dallas pulling out earlier after 10 players and a coach tested positive. After the opening match was played Wednesday, there was two games yesterday, with the Philadelphia Union beating New York City FC 1-0, and the New England Revolution beating the Montreal Impact 1-0.
Full-scale NBA practices began at the Disney World complex on Thursday (July 9th), with the Orlando Magic the first team to hit the court after being the first team to arrive earlier this week. NBA players will get to have a little extracurricular fun in their “bubble” in Orlando when the season resumes later this month. They’re getting after-hours access to certain attractions, like Expedition Everest, the Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster and Test Track Epcot.
The players will also have access to three golf courses, fishing trips at Grand Marina, and bowling . . . plus pool tables, ping pong, video games, swimming pools, tennis courts, and bikes.
Each team hotel will also have barbers, braiders, manicurists and pedicurists.

DARIUS RUCKER’S ANNUAL BENEFIT CONCERT WILL STREAM THIS YEAR
Despite the pandemic, Darius Rucker has figured out a way to continue with his annual live concert to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
In a press release, Darius commented: “Even though we can’t all get together for a normal concert right now, it’s important that we continue to support St. Jude and the amazing work that they do.”
Now in its 11th year, the event has raised over $2 million to date. He’ll be joined by Clint Black and Tracy Lawrence at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on July 30.
Tickets to the pay-per-view only event start at $15 with VIP options offering limited-edition and signed posters priced at $50 and $100. Tickets go on sale today (July 10.)
