CK Mornings

➢ When a woman told a wildlife official, she thought she’d seen a wolverine on the beach of Washington state’s Long Beach Peninsula they didn’t believe her.

The creatures live in remote mountainous areas and any sightings — let alone on a beach — are rare, then she showed them a picture.

Jeff Lewis, a conservation biologist said that he confirmed the animal was indeed a wolverine. There are only around 20 of the mammals in the entire state. They are usually roaming in the remote mountainous areas of the North Cascades not on the sandy beach.

Scientists believe there are only 300 of the species left in the US

➢ An Idaho man drank a liter of lemon juice through a straw in under 17 seconds for a Guinness World Record. David Rush, who has broken more than 100 Guinness records to promote STEM education, emptied the glass containing a whole liter of 100 percent lemon juice in 16.53 seconds. Rush’s time bested the previous record of 17.12 seconds, set by Andre Ortolf. Rush said he kept from throwing up after finishing the juice, but his stomach discomfort lasted until the next day.

➢ An Amazon driver in Idaho paused to pray on a family’s porch, because their baby has a medical condition that puts him at a high risk of getting COVID-19.  (The family saw her praying on their doorbell cam and posted the clip on Facebook to honor her.)

  1. Toyota was originally called Toyoda, with a “d,” because the founder’s name was Sakichi Toyoda.  But after one year they decided to change it, since “toyoda” means “fertile rice paddies” and they didn’t want to be associated with farming.

GOOD NEWS

Jennie Stejna, a 103-year-old great-great grandmother in Massachusetts, celebrated defeating the coronavirus in the best way possible: by knocking back a cold one.

“She always had that feisty fighting spirit,” granddaughter Shelley Gunn said. “She didn’t give up.” Family members said that Stejna, a nursing home resident and “hardcore Boston sports fan” developed a fever, tested positive for the virus and quickly worsened.

But she beat COVID-19 ― and the nursing home staff let her celebrate with a Bud Light.

There’s a nine-year-old kid in England with cerebral palsy named Tobias Weller.  And he wanted to walk for charity after he was inspired by Captain Tom Moore’s charity walk.  So he started walking back and forth in front of his house . . . did the length of a MARATHON in 70 days . . . and raised $100,000.  He finished the final leg of it the other day.

KEEPING TOMATOES IN THE FRIDGE OR AT ROOM TEMPERATURE DOES NOT IMPACT FLAVOR

Leaving your tomatoes inside or outside of the fridge is a personal choice, but a new study finds neither choice impacts the flavor of your produce. Researchers tested storing tomatoes at about 44 degrees Fahrenheit and 68 degrees Fahrenheit and had expert food tasters weigh in. The tasters reported “no significant difference in flavor” between the two. The tasters rated the tomatoes on characteristics such as sweetness, acidity, and juiciness for the test. Lead study author Larissa Kanski adds, “It is the variety of tomato in particular that has an important influence on the flavor. The shorter the storage period, the better it is for the flavor and related attributes. However, we were able to show that, taking into account the entire post-harvest chain, short-term storage of ripe tomatoes in the refrigerator did not affect the flavor.”

THE OTHER CADBURY SECRET:
Cadbury has finally answered the ages-old question of whether or not chocolate should be stored in the cupboard or the fridge. It seems some people like their chocolate cold, giving it a snap-like effect when they eat it. And others prefer it to melt-in-the-mouth (and to be easier on the teeth, too). The answer? According to Cadbury, chocolate should be kept in the cupboard. When asked the question on Twitter, the chocolate-maker responded: “Chocolate should always be stored in a slightly cool, dry, dark place such as cupboard or pantry at temperatures less than 21°C to ensure the quality isn’t compromised.”

YOU SHOULD STILL TAKE VACATION DAYS DURING THE PANDEMIC

If you’ve been working from home for the past several weeks you might be thinking there’s no need to take vacation time, but you should.

Kenadi Silcox explains, “Think of a regular vacation you’d take. When you splay out on the beach or read by the pool, the intention is to relax.

A day off at home might not feel the same, but if you’ve spent the last few weeks working overtime, putting aside some time to just veg out in front of the TV isn’t a bad idea.”

She also suggests framing your paid time off request not as vacation but as more of a mental health day. Even if you’re only able to get a Monday or Friday off, she says taking a tiny break from your routine—and from work—can help prevent burnout as we all navigate a difficult time.

TUESDAY JUNE 2ND

  1. U.S. President Trump on Monday (June 1st) threatened to deploy the military against protests that, while mostly peaceful, have repeatedly become violent.

Just minutes before Trump spoke, police and National Guard soldiers began pushing back hundreds of peaceful protesters in Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House, including using tear gas, flash bangs and rubber bullets more than a half-hour before a city curfew was to start. It was done to clear the way so that Trump could walk to St. John’s Episcopal Church. The bishop of the Episcopal Diocese that St. John’s belongs to, Reverend Mariann Budde, said afterward that she was, quote, “outraged” that Trump used the church that way, saying church officials hadn’t been told it was going to happen.

  1. Yesterday, George Floyd’s brother Terrence Floyd visited the corner in Minneapolis where his brother was killed.  And he gave a pretty rousing speechon why the violent protests have to end.

  1. Jimmy Fallon had a very serious tone to his show last night.  Here is part of his message about recent civil rights protests and concerns.  (From “The Tonight Show” on Monday, June 1, 2020)

  1. A family in Oklahoma City who were homeless until 2018 are using the crisis as a chance to give back.  They got some help from a group called Positive Tomorrows when the mom lost her job during the outbreak.  But it was more money than they really needed.  So they usedthe rest to buy blankets and feed hundreds of homeless people.  The mom and one of her daughters talked about it, and said their next project is school supplies.

Baseball Players Want the Ability to Opt Out of Playing Over COVID-19 Risks

Whether there’s baseball or not this year depends a lot on the players, and if they’re willing to play during the pandemic.

The players union is now pushing for a 114-game season that would start June 30th.  (A normal season is 162 games.)  But they want all players to be able to OPT OUT if they think it’s unsafe.  And some of them would still get paid.

Players with health issues or high-risk family members could opt out and still get a paycheck, which wasn’t in the owners’ proposal.  Anyone else would forfeit their salary.

Another sticking point is the number of games.  Last month, team owners pushed for an 82-game season, and claimed anything beyond that would be too expensive without live fans buying tickets.  But the players want more games so they can make more money.

Unfortunately, the deal probably won’t happen.  Even the players expect the owners to reject it, but they’re hoping it leads to a compromise later this week.

If the deal DID go through, here’s what a 114-game season would look like . . .

The regular season would run from June 30th to October 31st . . . the All-Star Game would happen during or after the postseason . . . and the World Series would potentially happen after Thanksgiving.

Kip Moore Would Love to Go On Tour and Play His New Album for You

You probably know that a new album release is almost always followed by a tour to support it.  The tour helps sell more records and the album helps push the ticket sales.

So yeah, that’s another thing that’s been turned on its head because of the pandemic.  We’ve seen Luke Bryan and the Dixie Chicks delay their new releases because there’s so much at stake.

But not KIP MOORE.  His new album “Wild World” is out today, so if you want to throw somebody a bone, toss it his way and buy the record.  He deserves it.

Don’t get me wrong.  He’ll still hit the road if he can.  In fact, he’s keeping an ear close to the ground.  He tells People, quote, “We’ve discussed what we’d like to do if certain things do happen and we’ve approached the [idea] of large gatherings.”

Obviously, large gatherings are a longshot, so he’s ready to turn on a dime.  Quote, “Maybe I set out and do super, super small bars, just me and my guitar.  I don’t know.  We’ll cross that bridge when we know what that scenario will look like.”

TIM McGRAW BROUGHT HIS MOM TO TEARS WITH LATEST HIT

Tim McGraw‘s latest hit, “I Called Mama,” instantly brought his own mother to tears the first time she heard it. Tim tells us: [“I sent it to her and I said, ‘We’re gonna release this single. It’s gonna come out Mother’s Day weekend,’ and then she sent me crying emojis. I knew better than to call her cause I knew what she was doing. I knew she wouldn’t be able to talk at the time cause I know my mom pretty well and I knew exactly what she meant when she sent those emojis. That’s why she didn’t call.”]

“I Called Mama” is flying up the charts, already sitting in the Top 25 at country radio.

Earlier this week, Tim shared a message about racial equality on social media in the wake of the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd at the hands of a police officer. He wrote, in part, “Our collective heart should break with every injustice brought to light. Our collective voices should be heard for each and every injustice brought to light, for there are many in the darkness. We must find a way to shine light on what is happening . . .”
