On Today’s Show
➢ The SpaceX launch, which was a huge success. It launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Saturday afternoon, two days after it got delayed by weather. It’s the first time astronauts have launched from U.S. soil since 2011. And it’s the first time a private company has put someone into orbit. One of the coolest parts of the SpaceX rocket is that it’s reusable. Less than ten minutes after liftoff, the rocket booster landed on a platform in the middle of the ocean.
The astronauts Bob and Doug docked with the Space Station yesterday morning.
➢ A gang of monkeys attacked a laboratory assistant and escaped with a batch of coronavirus test samples in India. The bizarre incident saw the troop of primates launch their assault near Meerut Medical College in Delhi. According to local media, the animals then snatched COVID-19 test samples from three patients and fled. One of the monkeys was later spotted in a tree chewing one of the sample collection kits.
➢ A plane carried passengers from Germany to Italy before turning around midair because its intended airport is closed until this month. A spokesperson confirmed the mix-up, which played out over four hours. Flight EW9844 set off from Düsseldorf, intending to make the 730-mile trip to Sardinia’s Olbia Airport. It wasn’t until the plane began its approach that air traffic control informed pilots that the airport was closed to commercial traffic. Pilots were given the option to land 120 miles away in Cagliari, on the southern tip of Sardinia, but instead returned to Düsseldorf. Fortunately, there were only two passengers on board. After experiencing “this little sightseeing tour of western Europe,” they were rebooked on another flight.
➢ Imagine that you’re just hoping to catch your dinner when you stumble across a shipwreck. Officials confirmed that a Mexican fisherman named Manuel Polanco discovered the wreckage of what is thought to be an 18th- or 19th- century English sailboat in an area of the Caribbean coast near the Banco Chinchorro atoll reef (off the coast of Mexico.) The area is known as “Dreamcatcher” or “Sleep Depriver” due to the large number of shipwrecks in the area. The shipwreck most recently found by Polanco is the 70th found in the area.
➢ Fans who want to roll like Tom Brady will get their chance for a hefty price. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback is selling his Stretched Becker Cadillac Escalade ESV for $300,000. The office on wheels features “VIP” seats with massage and automatic foot rests, 32-inch and 12-inch screens, “aviation style” folding tables and a high-end mobile internet router. The original cost of the vehicle was $350,000 and Brady put just 13,000 miles on it.

GO BAREFOOT DAY:
Today is “Go Barefoot Day”. And maybe this is a good chance to remind you of a study that found that wearing shoes indoors is a straight-up bad idea.
That’s unless your shoes are strictly “indoors”, as they say in kindergarten. Why? Bacteria. Lots of it. A University of Arizona study found an average of 421,000 different bacteria growing on shoes – with 96% of them harboring fecal matter.
The study also indicated that bacteria can be tracked by shoes over long distances inside your home. Kelly Reynolds, Ph.D., a microbiologist who was involved in the study, said: “We walk through things like bird droppings, dog waste and germs on public restroom floors, all of which are sources for E. coli.”
The study went on to see how much of this nastiness was spread onto our floors at home when we fail to take off our shoes, and the answer is between 90%-99%.
FOUR RANDOM FACTS
- The Internet Movie Database originally started in 1990, with a group of guys trying to make a list of the actresses with the best eyes. And it just grew from there.
- Michael Jordangot his degree in “cultural geography” from the University of North Carolina, because his backup plan after basketball was to be a weatherman.
- The first ever cell phone call was placed on April 3rd, 1973, when one of the engineers at Motorola who built the phone walked out onto the street and called a competitor at AT&T to brag.
- The guy who invented “Pokemon”got the idea for a game where you collected rare monsters because he collected bugs as a kid.

STUDY: SAYING THE F-WORD MIGHT HELP TAKE THE PAIN AWAY
If you tend to swear when you get hurt you might actually be lessening your physical pain. An old study from 2009 found that people who kept their hands in icy-cold water were able to withstand the pain longer if they swore—and study leader and psychologist Richard Stevens determined that swearing under certain circumstances can increase a person’s pain threshold.
A related study from April of this year found that saying the F-word was linked to a 32 percent increase in pain threshold and a 33 percent increase in pain tolerance, while muttering made-up words had no beneficial impact.
The researchers write, “While it is not properly understood how swear words gain their power, it has been suggested that swearing is learned during childhood and that aversive classical conditioning contributes to the emotionally arousing aspects of swear word use.”
Other studies have found that swearing in various languages has no bearing on people’s pain perceptions.

DAN + SHAY, THOMAS RHETT DENOUNCE RACISM VIA SOCIAL MEDIA
Dan + Shay returned to social media after a long absence over the weekend to comment. The duo left a lengthy message urging people to “use your voice” to enact positive change during this tumultuous time. They wrote in part, “We, as humans, MUST come together to make a change. Racism and discrimination because of someone’s skin color is just simply WRONG . . .”
Thomas Rhett also weighed in yesterday (Sunday, May 31st) “as the father of a black daughter and two white daughters.” He wrote, in part, “So if there is any question on where I stand let me be clear- I stand with you, I stand with George and his family and all those who have faced racism. I stand with my wife and my daughters. We will be fighting this fight for the rest of our lives. Rest In Peace, George”
Saturday (May 30th) night’s protests in Nashville turned violent with more than 30 buildings and businesses being destroyed and/or defaced. As a bar owner on the city’s popular lower Broadway,
John Rich saw the windows at his Redneck Riviera smashed. He tweeted, “This is not a protest. This is anarchy plain and simple. The worst part about the criminals who were looting/burning/defacing Nashville last night, is that it TOTALLY shifts focus to THEM instead of the murder of #GeorgeFloyd It dishonors the memory of Mr Floyd and only serves to make the divide in our country that much deeper.”

JUSTIN MOORE’S DAUGHTERS PLAY ‘MOTHER HEN’ TO TODDLER SON
Justin Moore‘s three daughters love to cater to their younger brother, the baby and only boy in the family. His girls range from five to 10 years old, while his son, South, is two. Justin tells us that South’s sisters are like having some extra caretakers at home. [“They’re all really good with him now. They all kinda are mother hennin’ him to death. I think at times, he’s like, ‘Alright, get away from me.’ But no, it’s awesome for us because his bedroom’s upstairs, so if he’s waking up from a nap, instead of Kate and I having to walk upstairs, they’ll almost fight over who gets to go get him. I wish they were as good to each other as they are to him. I mean, they’re downright hateful to each other.”]

Carrie Underwood – scared herself while experimenting with TikTok’s “reality ripple.” It’s a type of thermal scan that creates an infrared trail when picking up a person’s body heat. In a video shot at her cabin, she explains that she is “looking for ghosts”, when suddenly, a shape can be seen in the corner of the room, reappearing each time she pans over to it. In a second vid, Underwood admits, “I’m super freaked out right now — super freaked out.”
