CK Mornings

➢ Actor Nathan Fillion is sending his gratitude to a Costco employee in Edmonton who did a big solid for a very special person in his life. He took to Twitter to share this heartwarming story: “The other day in Canada, a woman buying gas at a Costco had trouble with her credit card. The attendant bought her gas out of his own pocket and asked only that she pay it forward…That attendant was Les Thompson, and Les? That woman was my mother.” Fillion wrote: “You restore my faith in humanity, sir. My dad and I are sending three iPads and headphones to a nearby senior care facility so that folks there can visit with their families. Right now, we could all stand to be a little less afraid, and a little more Les.”

➢ A family in Virginia managed to stumble on nearly a million dollars in cash while taking a drive. Emily Schnatz says she was driving the car with her family inside when she noticed the car in front of her swerving around an object in the road, and then her car hit the object. The family loaded the bag, and another spotted 15 feet away, into their pick-up truck. The opened the bags to find them filled with small plastic baggies that “were addressed with something that said ‘cash vault.” The family found the bags to contain nearly a million dollars. They called Police who believe the mail bags belonged to the postal service and that the money was meant for a bank.

➢ A guy named Brian Landreth in Portland, Oregon was working with his daughter Grace on a school project about collecting data.  So they put five paint colors on the side of their house, then put a sign up asking people to vote for a color online.

But . . . their neighbor tweeted a picture of the project and said, quote, “My neighbor is crowd sourcing their next house color.”

And the tweet went viral.  So now, thousands of people from all over the world are voting on the paint color. Based on the comments on Twitter, it seems like turquoise blue is leading.

➢ TBS has ordered a 20-episode revival of the game show “Wipeout”. The original series, which aired on ABC from 2008-2014, featured contestants competing against each other in what was billed as the ‘world’s largest obstacle course’. The show celebrated athletic achievement, but also reveled in the comedic possibilities of failure as contestant’s navigated the various obstacles.

➢ Ariel Winter cut off the tip of her thumb while cooking.  Then, after she got to the hospital, a nurse put the piece of her thumb in a plastic bag and gave it to her, which she threw away on accident.  Here she is telling the story.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Cellophane Tape Day”, marking the date in 1930 that a patent for the product was granted to Richard Drew. His invention was later marketed by 3M as ‘Scotch’ tape. Mr. Drew also invented masking tape. (I had a book about him. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the beginning…)

  • “Sunscreen Protection Day”, to create awareness of the importance of using protection against the harmful UV rays from the Sun

MYTHBUSTERS: SUNSCREEN EDITION
Today is ‘Sunscreen Protection Day’.  Let’s set the record straight on some myths about sun protection. The statements below, contrary to what you have probably been told, are all myths:

  • A base tan protects you:  A base tan is nature’s way of producing sun protection because you’ve been irradiated. However, it doesn’t lessen your risk of skin cancer, and you’ll age your skin exponentially with constant sun tanning.
  • The number on sunscreen is proportionate to the number of minutes of sun protection:  The number has nothing to do with exposure time — it’s about the strength of protection against the sun’s harmful rays. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to sunburn protected skin relative to unprotected skin.  Here’s how to do the math — it’s simple, we swear: SPF 15 allows 1/15 of harmful UVB rays to reach the skin. The remaining 14/15 means you’re protecting against 93% of UVB radiation. So, SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 prevents 98%.  (OK you got me there…I thought that one was true!)
  • One application of sunscreen in the morning is enough for the whole day:  Reapplying is just as important as the first coat. Sunscreen gets consumed once the light hits it, which means you have to reapply regularly to remain protected.
  • You don’t need sunscreen during off-peak hours: The sun’s powerful rays can cause damage no matter what time it is. If you’re outside at any point for longer than 15 minutes, you need some SPF. You can still get burned at 8 am as well as after 4 pm.

  • Sunscreen on your face, arms, back, and legs is enough:  That’s a great start, but you should also apply it to the ears, nose, hands and the tops of your feet. And remember your scalp, especially if you have thinning or less hair.

FOUR RANDOM FACTS

  1.  When scientists in England saw the platypus for the first time in the late 1700s, they thought it was fake . . . and someone had stitched together a bunch of other animal parts to prank them.

  1. Jackie Chan’smother was an opium smuggler, and his father was a spy.

  1. The Atlanta Falcons drafted John Waynein the 17th round of the 1972 NFL Draft.  He was 64 years old at the time, but they wanted to symbolize that they valued men who were TOUGH.  The league vetoed the pick.

  1. Growing a beard has health benefits such as preventing allergies, asthma attacks and rashes, and protecting your skin from the sun.

GOOD NEWS

The CEO of an apartment operating company called The Connor Group made $1.6 million in the stock market and decided to divide it up among all of his essential employees like property managers and maintenance workers.

On the first day barbershops in Denver reopened, some guy got a $27 haircut and left the stylist a $2,500 tip.  He also gave $1,000 to the manager . . . $500 to the receptionist . . . and $100 to each of the other 18 employees.

We’ve seen a few stories about adults parading around in inflatable T-Rex costumes to cheer kids up.  But an eight-year-old kid in New Jersey flipped the script.  He’s been walking around in one and waving at cars to cheer ADULTS up.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

An Albuquerque teenager was praised for his honesty after finding and returning more than

$135,000 in cash near an ATM.

Jose Nunez Romaniz, 19, said he was “Just thinking about it was a prank,” he said. “I just didn’t know what to think to be honest”

The 19 year old did not take any of the money. He said his mother was a big reason why he knew he had to turn it in.

“In the back of my head, I was just thinking about my parents, especially my mom, what she would do if I came home with the money, what she would do with her chancla to hit me,” he said.

APD Chief Mike Geier said Jose’s actions are well deserved of the praise.

Jose received a plaque from the city, and an invitation to apply for a police service aid position.

PNM also have him a check for $500 to use toward his classes at CNM.

ESPN Radio also hooked him up with some signed gear. Officials said a worker left the money near the ATM, and never loaded into the machine.

THOMAS RHETT CHARTS 15TH NUMBER ONE HIT

Thomas Rhett had his 15th #1 with “Beer Can’t Fix” feat. Jon Pardi. Thomas co-wrote “Beer Can’t Fix,” which is the third consecutive chart-topper from his fourth studio album, Center Point Road.

Thomas is certainly successful by anyone’s definition, but he tells us that as he gets older, he defines success differently than he used to. [“Probably having kids and having a wife that I love so much really just kind of put a lot of things into perspective, and so I’ve really just tried to live every day in the present.  Being present this year is my New Year’s resolution, and not trying to think what’s going to happen in five years from now, but success for me is just always writing better songs and always playing better shows and always trying to be the best dude that I can.”)
