CK Mornings

A couple in Calgary won a shopping spree on Saturday.  They had 50 seconds to grab up to $500 in groceries.  So they came up with a plan, grabbed a ton of non-perishable stuff, and decided to donate all of it to their local food bank.  They ended up with $598 worth of stuff in their cart, but since it was for a good cause, the store let them keep it.

They also got a bunch of local businesses to donate another $1,500.

The 2019 National Senior Games are going on in New Mexico right now.  And a 103-year-old woman named Julia Hawkins just crushed it in the hundred-yard dash with a record-breaking time of 46.07 seconds.  They call her “Hurricane” Hawkins.  She says she just thought running in the race would be a “neat” thing to do.

ENTERTAINMENT

  • “Toy Story 4” (G, Animation/Family):  When a new toy called “Forky” joins Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside old and new friends reveals how big the world can be for a toy.

(Tim Allen, Keanu Reeves, Tom Hanks)

Christina Hendricks says all her character, Gabby Gabby, wants is to be loved: [“I play Gabby Gabby. She’s a 1950’s doll, who had a dysfunctional voice box, her entire life. So a child never wanted to, play with her, and of course a toy’s entire purpose, is to be loved by a child and to love a child. As creepy as Gabby Gabby is, it’s all very very wonderful to me, because I love antique stores. I always as a child wanted a ventriloquist doll.”] SOUNDCUE (:25 OC: . . . a ventriloquist doll.)

  • “Child’s Play” (R-Rated, Horror):  A mother gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. (Aubrey Plaza, Mark Hamill)
  • “Anna” (R-Rated, Action/Adventure):  Beneath Anna Poliatova’s striking beauty lies a secret that will unleash her indelible strength and skill to become one of the world’s most feared government assassins. (Helen Mirren, Luke Evans, Cillian Murphy)

RANDOM REPORT

✓ The first day of summer is always between June 20th and June 22nd. It varies due to the Earth’s rotation not exactly reflecting our calendar year.

✓ The “dog days of summer” refer to the weeks between July 3 and August 11 and are named after the Dog Star (Sirius)

✓ Television used to show only reruns during the summer months. The idea was that everyone was outside enjoying the weather.

✓ In the summer heat, the iron in France’s Eiffel Tower expands, making the tower grow more than half a foot

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A lot of world records are pointless.  Like a guy from Indiana who once broke 46 wooden toilet seats over his head in under a minute.

But this one actually made the world a slightly better place . . .

A bunch of scuba divers got together near Boca Raton, Florida on Saturday, and attempted to break the record for “largest underwater cleanup.”

They cleared trash from the ocean floor.  And they all had to be in the water doing it at the same time to qualify.

The previous record of 614 divers was set in Egypt in 2015.  And they JUST topped it.

Someone from Guinness was there, and the final count was 633.  So they beat it by 19.

We haven’t seen an official total yet for how much trash they cleaned up.  But they were right next to a pier, and pulled out about1,600 pounds of lead fishing weights alone.

64% of Us Consider Our Car to Be a “Friend,” and 44% of Us Have Named It

I don’t know how this question makes sense unless you’re in a Pixar movie.  But a new survey found 64% of Americans consider their car to be a “friend.”

And just like real friendships, we’re willing to make sacrifices for it.  Here are eight stats from the survey . . .

  1. 44% of car owners have named their car before.
  2. Over a third of us would rather get a cut or scratch on our body than on our car.
  3. 15% of people would rather break a bone than have their car break down.
  4. 21% would rather spend a full day in jail than have their car totaled.
  5. 13% would rather break up with their significant other than lose their car.
  6. 70% of us have at least one fond memory associated with our car.  The top memories include first dates . . . a first kiss . . . a proposal . . . a road trip . . . bringing a baby home from the hospital . . . and driving around blasting music.
  7. 45% of us have CRIED when we had to get a new car.  We assume cost has something to do with that one.
  8. The average American spends 8 hours and 22 minutes in their car each week.  Which is 1 hour and 12 minutes a day . . . or 18 full days a year.

Five Myths About Summer

In honor of today being the first day of summer, we’re busting five of the most common summertime MYTHS . . .

  1. “You can catch a cold from air conditioning.”  Not exactly . . . at least not from the temperature alone.  But there IS some evidence that running the AC constantly can dry out your nasal passages and make it slightly easier for viruses to enter your body.

  1. “Any drink will rehydrate you on a hot day.”  Drinks with a bunch of sugar or alcohol can actually DE-hydrate you.  So if you’re outside on a hot day, make sure you’re drinking lots of water and not counting on soda or beer just because there’s water in it.

  1. “You can’t get a sunburn on a cloudy day.”  Clouds don’t block out UV rays, so you can still burn even when it’s cloudy.

  1. “Eating garlic will keep mosquitoes away.”  Garlic and other gimmicks like essential oils, ultrasonic devices, and smartphone apps all have little if any scientific evidence showing they’ll protect you.  Stick with bug sprays containing DEET or Picaridin if you want to avoid mosquitoes.

  1. “A dip in the pool can double as a shower.”  No way.  Pools are usually filled with bacteria capable of causing diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and infections.  In fact, you should shower BEFORE getting into the water . . . AND after.

“Toy Story 4” could make up to $200 million this weekend.  And if it does, that’ll be a new record for an animated movie.  The “Child’s Play” remake also comes out this weekend, but it’s only expected to make $16 million to $18 million.

LUKE COMBS MAKES MORE HISTORY WITH ‘THE PREQUEL,’

Luke Combs continues to break records this week following the release of his new EP, The Prequel. All five tracks from the EP are currently in Billboard ‘s Top 25, a feat not accomplished by any artist in 60 years since Johnny Cash in 1959. Luke also holds the top two spots on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart with The Prequel (No. 1) and his debut album, This One’s For You (No. 2). The Prequel also debuted at No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.

Adding to a monumental few weeks, Luke was recently invited to be the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry. The honor was quite unexpected, and Luke took several minutes to compose himself after becoming emotional. [“Just talk about not knowing what to say or like what to do. And yeah, they got me real good because my parents were here and I didn’t know it, everybody I work with is here and I didn’t know it, but I was like genuinely floored- like absolutely flabbergasted. Holy cow! I just can’t believe it. I just can’t even put it into words really. It’s unbelievable.”]

The debut single from The Prequel, “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Country Streaming Songs chart with 11 million streams—setting the record for the best first week of streaming ever for a country song.
