CK Mornings

TUESDAY JANUARY 8TH                          –                              WHAT’S HAPPENING

On Thursday night, a 46-year-old guy named August tried to kidnap a woman at a strip mall in Charlotte, North Carolina.  He tried to force her into his car, but she ran away, and he followed her.

And the woman ran . . . right into a karate studio.

The studio’s head instructor is a guy named Randall Ephraim, and he was cleaning up inside when the woman ran in and told him a guy was trying to kidnap her.

So when August came inside, Randall told him to leave . . . but August started SWINGING at him. And you can probably imagine what happened next:  Randall DESTROYED him, and August had to be taken out on a stretcher.

He’s facing multiple charges for kidnapping, assault, and more.

Drivers in PEI who do not stop for a school bus will lose their license for three months and could also face a fine of up to $5,000. The law, went into effect Dec. 8.

To get one’s license back, the driver would have to do the following:

Meet with highway safety officials …….Pay a $100 reinstatement fee

Take a defensive driving course within 6 months of getting license reinstated

Drivers will then be placed on probation. Any points within this year on one’s record means one’s license will be suspended yet again.

The law passed in response to concerned parents and school bus drivers calling for stricter penalties after multiple incidents involving children getting hit or nearly hit while getting on and off school buses.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A 12-year-old girl from Barrie, Ont. is thanking the generous strangers who sent her gift cards and cash after she lost her wallet on Boxing Day.

Harper Fox said that she had been saving up from Christmas and her birthday to

But during a Boxing Day shopping trip with her dad to a local plaza, she lost her wallet, which contained $300 worth of gift cards.

Harper then asked her mother, Miranda to post on Facebook in the hopes that someone would find and return the wallet with a picture and complete strangers from across the country quickly stepped forward with generous offers to replace its contents.

They had a bunch of servers in Alberta, in Calgary, who said, ‘We’ve pooled all out money together and we want to send something for Harper,’”.

And most touching of all, Harper says, was a gift from a mother struggling with a sick newborn who said she just wanted to pay it forward.

Wanting to thank everyone for their generosity, the mother and daughter recently posted a video to Facebook. It’s already been viewed more than 30,000 times.

For her part, Harper says that she still hasn’t spent a penny from the gift cards that she’s received. She says that she will wait two more weeks, and if her wallet turns up with her original gift cards, she’ll then donate everything.

LIFE ADVICE FROM A 100 YEAR OLD

Jamiran Ali of Mississauga isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Ali or “Ma” turned 100 last week, and is already thinking about hitting the dance floor which is one of her favourite pastimes. She is known for her dance moves, often to Bollywood music.

Ali has 10 children, 30 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Born in 1918 in Trinidad and Tobago, she immigrated to Canada in 1972 at the age of 54. Three years after settling in Ontario, she quickly became interested in fitness. She got her first job at a gym in 1975 in Toronto as a locker room attendant. During her downtime or in the mornings, she would go and use the gym’s equipment and started working out regularly for 18 years.

She says at one point, she did 100 sit-ups in the morning — every single day.

In 2000, she decided to venture out of the family home and move into a condo in Mississauga. Even at 100, she manages all of her own medication and banking.

There have been other stories of people sharing their secrets to living to 100, often around drinking wine or something random but for Ali, her secrets are simpler. It’s about eating vegetables, fitting in a form of exercise and staying surrounded by loved ones. She still makes sure she gets enough sleep every night.

And besides dancing, she says partying in general keeps her going.

Despite living alone, she doesn’t feel isolated. “When you are happy, you never feel alone.”

MEDITATION AND EXERCISE LOWER YOUR RISK OF GETTING THE FLU, STUDY CLAIMS –

You’ve likely heard that meditation and exercise can bring big health benefits, but a new study adds another to the list: prevention of cold and flu.

Researchers divided people into three groups: one took an eight-week exercise class, one took an eight-week meditation class, and the third took no classes.

Over the course of eight months, there were 112 cold and flu episodes among the meditation group (they missed 73 days of work), and 120 such episodes among the exercise group (they missed 82 days of work).

Among the other group there were 134 respiratory infection episodes for which 105 working days were missed. Lead study author Dr. Bruce Barrett says, “More research into the benefits of exercise and meditation is warranted, maybe in higher-risk or sicker populations, where there are more health benefits to gain.”

Want to Get Paid $130K to Live in and Run a Lighthouse?

Ever dreamed of living in a lighthouse on an island? There is an opening. New operators are needed to run the East Brother Light Station, which sits on an island in a straight separating San Pablo and San Francisco bays.

The Californian, Victorian light station was built in 1874 and converted into a five-room bed-and-breakfast in 1979. The operators would be paid $130,000 a year with the opportunity to make more, officials said.

“If they work hard to market and book the inn and operate efficiently, there is potentially more income for them,” Richmond Mayor Tom Butt, who is also president of the nonprofit that oversees the light station, told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The right candidate is expected to know what it takes to keep the lights on, including having a valid Coast Guard-issued captain’s license, as they have to ferry travelers back and forth to the 0.7-acre island. Current operators Che Rodgers and Jillian Meeker hand over the keys to the inn in April.

Right now, people on Twitter are losing their minds after an image went viral that uses fairly basic math to show that one large, 18-inch pizza is actually more total food than TWO 12-inch pizzas.  And not just a little more food . . . it’s a decent amount.

The 18-inch pizza is 254 square inches of pizza . . . while the two 12-inch pizzas add up to 226 square inches.  But people are confused because, you know, two is supposed to be more than one.

LAUREN ALAINA ANNOUNCES BREAK FROM SOCIAL MEDIA – (01/08/2019)

Lauren Alaina is taking a step back from social media.

She posted a throwback picture of herself as a kid on Instagram writing, “This Lauren didn’t care if she wore boy clothes. She preferred it actually. She didn’t know the future. It’s ups and downs. The happiness and pain it held. She didn’t know about heartbreak or loss. She didn’t know how cruel people can be or how much words can hurt, but she didn’t care what people thought of her or her boy clothes. She was happy and sure of herself. She knew she wanted to write songs and sing them. She loved fiercely and boldly. And most importantly, she knew how to smile through a mom bob. I want to live everyday to be more like her. I’m looking behind every rock and corner for her this year, and I’m going to find her . . .”

She hits the road with Blake Shelton beginning next month.
