A painting by British artist David Hockney sold for $90.3 million at Christie’s last night (November 15th), breaking the record by far for a work by a living artist sold at auction. The 1972 painting, “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures),” is part of Hockney’s “pool” series and is considered one of the best works by the now 81-year-old artist. The painting, whose buyer was not immediately revealed, had been long held by a private collector. The previous record for a work sold at auction by a living artist was Jeff Koons‘ “Balloon Dog,” which sold for $58.4 million in 2013.

Drink Your PBR Now, Because Pabst Is in Serious Trouble

Pabst Blue Ribbon is on the verge of going EXTINCT.

Here’s what’s going on.  Pabst has something called a contract brewing deal with MillerCoors, where MillerCoors brews, packages, and ships its beer.  Pabst, and other smaller companies, just don’t have the infrastructure to do that themselves.

Pabst’s deal with MillerCoors started in 1999 and is scheduled to end in December of 2020 . . . and MillerCoors says they’ll only renew it for almost TRIPLE the price.

So Pabst is suing MillerCoors to keep their contract deal.  The trial is going on in Milwaukee right now, and it’s scheduled to last until the end of the month.

And if Pabst loses . . . well, it seems like they won’t have any choice but to go out of business.

Miller High Life, the Champagne of Beers, Will Now Come in Champagne Bottles

Miller High Life’s slogan is the “Champagne of Beers.”  And now . . . you’ll be able to buy it in gold CHAMPAGNE BOTTLES.

Miller has sold them before in Chicago and Milwaukee . . . but for this Christmas season, they’re rolling them out nationwide.

So for just $3.49, you can toast with the champagne of beers on New Year’s Eve instead of, you know, actual champagne.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

This might seem like a ‘small’ story, but it’s been HUGE for this kid.  Andrew Kirby is a high school sophomore in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.

He’s a great kid, but he was born with a condition called neurofibromatosis that’s required multiple surgeries.  As a result, he’s very shy and doesn’t have many friends.  And for years, he always sat alone at lunch.

His mom says she worried about him around lunchtime every day.  And they’d usually text each other, because he had no one else to talk to.  So she used to pray for him to just find ONE other kid to sit with.

Well, on his first day of school this year, he was sitting alone like he always did.  But then a few members of the student council saw him and decided it just wasn’t right.   So they asked him if he wanted to come sit at THEIR table.

And now instead of just one other kid to sit with, he’s got about TEN.

They’ve been sitting with him every single day so far this year.  And they all went to a movie together a few weeks ago.  So they’ve also been hanging out even when they’re not at school.

NOT HOLDING THE RAIL

The Supreme Court of Canada agreed Thursday to hear the case of a woman who was ticketed and arrested after she refused instructions to hold onto an escalator handrail.

Bela Kosoian was in a subway station in the Montreal suburb of Laval in 2009 when a police officer told her to respect a pictogram with the instruction, “hold the handrail.”

She replied that she did not consider the image, which also featured the word “Careful,” to be an obligation. She refused to hold the handrail, and tensions mounted after she also refused to identify herself.

The officers detained Kosoian for about 30 minutes before letting her go with two tickets — one for $100 for disobeying a pictogram and another for $320 for having obstructed the work of an inspector.

She was acquitted of the two infractions in Montreal municipal court in 2012 and subsequently filed a $45,000 lawsuit against the Montreal Transit Corp., the City of Laval and one of the officers.

Her suit was rejected by Quebec court in 2015 and by the Quebec Court of Appeal in 2017, which said Kosoian was the “author of her own misfortune.”

It will now be up to the country’s high court to settle the matter.

THE CDC WANTS PEOPLE TO EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGGIES:

Let’s be honest, fruits and veggies are not the favorite foods of most people.

But a new report reveals just nine percent of adults eat enough vegetables and 12 percent get the recommended amount of fruit daily. In case you were wondering, you’re supposed to have one-and-a-half to two cups of fruit, or its equivalent, and two to three cups of veggies daily.

Men ate far less than women did, and young adults (ages 18 to 30) are less likely than older folks to eat their greens, broccoli, and bananas.
