LIFESTYLE

Everyone wants to pick on straws these days, but a recent study says that cigarette butts are an even bigger environmental concern … at least when it comes to our oceans.  Cigarette butts contain filters, which might seem to be harmless (unless you are sucking on one), but in actuality they are causing permanent damage to our oceans and wildlife.  Each year, 5.6 trillion cigarettes are produced worldwide, each of which has a filter made of an extremely environmentally-unfriendly plastic called cellulose acetate, which can take more than a decade to decompose. By some counts, close to two-thirds of all of those butts are irresponsibly disposed of.  According to NBC News, more cigarette butts are collected by cleanup groups on beaches worldwide than plastic wrappers, containers, bottle caps, eating utensils, and bottles combined.

Wow, talk about patience. A Canadian man will finally find out what an ex-girlfriend gave him for Christmas nearly 50 years after the fact. Adrian Pearce caught the world’s attention after revealing that back in 1970, when he was 17, his girlfriend gave him a Christmas present just before dumping him, and that he’s kept it, unopened, ever since. Now he’s told the CBC it’s time to open the gift. Pearce says the story went so viral that his ex got in touch, telling him she doesn’t remember what’s inside the package. He’s invited her to an event on December 6th to unwrap the gift herself; if she doesn’t show, his wife will unwrap it.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

Here’s the crazy story of just one of the many heroes in Paradise, the town destroyed by California’s deadliest fire ever. His name is Allyn Pierce, and he’s the nurse who drove this truck through the flames.

Allyn manages the ICU at a hospital, helped with the quick evacuation of patients then he hopped in his truck with two colleagues and headed for safety.

Like many residents in Paradise, they quickly hit gridlock. But unfortunately for them, they were stuck in the middle of the fire. Flames were touching the side of his truck, and as Allyn watched other cars catch fire, he thought his was next. .

He recorded a goodbye message to his family: “Just in case this doesn’t work out, I want you to know I really tried to make it out.”

Suddenly a bulldozer appeared & knocked a burning truck next to him out of the way. There was some room to maneuver. But instead of going forward toward safety, he turned around & drove back into the heart of Paradise.

Allyn ended up back at the hospital and quickly realized injured Paradise residents were also there, looking for medical help. Doctors, nurses, paramedics & police started a triage center in the hospital parking lot. Then the hospital caught fire. The team quickly relocated the patients 100 yards away to the hospital’s helipad. Eventually authorities cleared a path to safety, so they loaded up the victims & drove out in a caravan. Everyone made it out safely.

Allyn stressed the triage was a massive group effort — and that they weren’t heroes.

Remember the Couple Who Raised $400,000 For a Homeless Guy Who Helped Them Get Gas? Yeah, It Was All a Scam

Right around this time last year, a story went viral out of Philadelphia.

A woman named Kate McClure ran out of gas in Philadelphia in the middle of the night and she didn’t have any cash.  And a homeless guy named Johnny Bobbitt walked to the gas station and used HIS last $20 to help her out.

So Kate and her husband Mark D’Amico set up a GoFundMe to thank him . . . and it wound up raising $400,000.  A pretty great, heartwarming story, right?  Well, we should’ve all known better.

It turns out the three of them came up with the story together as a way to scam people out of money.

Apparently Kate and Mark met Johnny about a month earlier, and then they met up with him a few times and gave him some money . . . and they all came up with the story together.  And Kate and Mark were also hoping to land a book deal out of it.

Now they’re all facing criminal charges of conspiracy and theft by deception.  Kate and Mark turned themselves in on Wednesday . . . and Johnny was arrested later that night.

CANNABIS CLASS:
With Canada’s recent move to legalize marijuana for recreational use, a Regina, SK man is cashing in…with class.  He is offering to teach others how to grow it at home.

Jeremy Drummond, the co-owner of The Grow Room, opened his shop on Oct. 17, the same day that the recreational use of marijuana was legalized in Canada. Under the Cannabis Act, adults are permitted to grow up to four cannabis plants per household, though they are not allowed to sell any of what they grow to others.

His educational “pot” classes provide step-by-step instruction on how to grow cannabis at home, and include segments on the new legalities of cannabis use, as well as the life cycle of the marijuana plant.

So far, business is slow, but he expects that to pick up when a legal supply of cannabis seeds becomes available in Saskatchewan.

———————————————————————————————————————

  1. Roy Clark died yesterday.  He was 85. Hee Haw gave him national exposure . . . he co-hosted it with Buck Owens.  Here’s Roy, and the show’s producer, Sam Lovullo, talking about the show.  Fun fact: CBS decided to cancel it because the network thought it was too rural.  They dumped other successful “hillbillie” shows like “The Beverly Hillbillies” and “Green Acres” too.  It’s known as the “rural purge.”

  1. The “Fantastic Beasts” sequel “The Crimes of Grindelwald” is out this weekend.  It’s up against the Mark Wahlbergmovie “Instant Family”, and the Viola Davis robbery thriller “Widows”.

  1. The Seattle Seahawks beat the Green Bay Packers 27-24 last night (November 15th) at home, with quarterback Russell Wilsongetting the winning score on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 5:08 left. Seattle came back for the win after the Packers had led 21-17 at halftime.

  1. A 29-year-old guy in Florida stole a credit card last month, dressed up as a woman, then stole a $4,000 French Bulldog puppy.  One of the other customers says, “When you think of puppies, you think ‘tiny and little and cute.’  You don’t think ‘giant man dressed as a female stealing credit card information and buying puppies.'”

You’d never know it from his regular picture, because he doesn’t have especially feminine features . . . but once he slapped on a black wig and some makeup, it was pretty convincing.

The Police just located him yesterday and arrested him.  The puppy hasn’t been found yet, but the police say they’re following some leads and they believe it’s okay.

Country Quiz: Who Said? “I Had To Sing With A Man To Get A Number One.”

“I had to sing with someone with a man to get a number one.”

  1. Maren Morris
  2. Dolly Parton
  3. Margo Price
  4. Wynonna
  5. Miranda Lambert
  6. Tanya Tucker

ANSWER:  E.  MIRANDA LAMBERT, in an interview.  She’s talking about “Drowns The Whiskey” . . . her song with JASON ALDEAN that went to #1 back in August.

She’s had her share of number ones but not lately.  Quote, “It is interesting that I haven’t had even a Top 20 in a long time.  And then it goes #1 because it’s a dude.”

Miranda’s beef is in line with the feeling that female artists aren’t getting fair treatment in all forms of media . . . including streaming service playlists, festival lineups, award shows, and radio.

On the bright side, there is a movement to help young female country artists, and leading the way is the CMT Next Women of Country.  KAREN FAIRCHILD introduced the 2019 class yesterday.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD TALKS BABY BOY – (11/16/2018)

Carrie Underwood did her gender reveal in a big way — on national television before millions of people during the CMA Awards on Wednesday (November 14th). With the help of co-host Brad Paisley, Carrie announced that she and husband Mike Fisher will be adding another boy to their family.

Carrie has not shared her official due date, but she’ll likely have plenty of time at home with the new baby before hitting the road in May on her Cry Pretty 360 tour.

Country Legend Roy Clark Has Died

Country singer-guitarist ROY CLARK passed away yesterday at the age of 85 due to complications from pneumonia.  He was a skilled guitarist and a great singer, but he’s most famous as the co-host with Buck Owens of “Hee Haw”.

The show debuted in 1969, and Roy did close to 600 episodes through the late ’90s.

Roy believed the show brought country music to the world.  Quote, “First and foremost, I am most proud of how ‘Hee Haw’ did its part to help pave the way for country music to burst from its regional roots to remarkable worldwide popularity.”

Roy had 52 singles make the country charts, he was a Grammy, CMA, and ACM winner.  He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

There’s a memorial being planned in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which is where he spent the last years of his life.
