Authorities in Northern California are looking for a hammer. A really, really big one. The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat says police in Healdsburg in California’s wine country are looking for an enormous artwork that vanished over the weekend. The artwork was an 800-pound ball-peen hammer made of metal with a long redwood handle. The hammer measures 21 feet long and the head is 6 feet tall. The piece, valued at $15,000, was loaned by the artist about a year ago to the Healdsburg Community Center. It vanished from the lawn sometime Friday night or Saturday morning. The artist, Doug Unkrey, says it would have required about eight people or a flatbed trailer with a winch to carry off his work. Police, of course, want to nail the thieves.

ENTERTAINMENT

“The Conners” killed off ROSEANNE BARR last night with a story that she suffered an opioid overdose, but Roseanne wasn’t watching.  In an interview last night, she said the firing was the worst thing that could’ve happened to her, and she’s trying to move on.  She says she has a lot of time for real life now, and she’s sleeping 17 hours a day.

Nicolas Cage says that he takes as many acting jobs as he can because he fears that his “self-destructive” tendencies will lead him astray if he isn’t busy. Cage says that, “If I don’t have somewhere to go in the morning and a job to do. . . then I’m just going to sit and order two bottles of red wine and dissolve, and I don’t want to be that person, so I have to work.”  Cage, is starring in seven movies released in 2018, including his latest thriller, “Mandy”, and already has four movies due out next year.

TODAY IS……………….

“Legalization Day” in Canada.  With recreational cannabis becoming legal, Canada becomes the second country in the world (after Uruguay) to do so.   It is permissible to possess up to 30 grams of legal marijuana and to grow up to four plants for personal use.

“Pasta Day”, celebrating the Italian staple that’s popular worldwide. There are over 350 varieties of pasta in Italy. A typical Italian eats over 60 lbs of the stuff per year.

1902, the FIRST CADILLAC was completed in Detroit.

1989, an EARTHQUAKE struck SAN FRANCISCO just before the third game of the WORLD SERIES between the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants.  It measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, destroyed 100,000 buildings and killed 67 people.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

Every year, Tim Horton’s pulls off another fun stunt with Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon and this year might be the best one yet.

Kenya apparently only has one hockey team and Tim Horton’s flew them to Canada so they would have someone to play against, and also gave them a couple extra teammates.

Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon.

It seemed like surprise after surprise, as the team saw their gear in the locker room and then had two of their favourite players show up to play alongside them.

There are several great moments in the clip, and a couple of times where the team is overwhelmed with excitement, but the top probably has to be one of the players touching Sidney Crosby’s face to make sure he is real.

Racism or Misunderstanding? A Woman Tries to Stop a Fellow Tenant From Entering Their Building

In case you haven’t seen this:  A woman got fired from her job after a video went viral of her trying to stop a man from entering a building they both live in.  She’s white, and he’s black . . . and that’s where the controversy lies.

The gentleman’s name is D’Arreion Toles. He’s lives on the fourth floor, but before that night he’d never met his third-floor neighbor.

It starts with her blocking him from entering the lobby.  D’Arreion asks her to move, but she demands proof that he lives there.  That leads to a standoff that continues up to the fourth floor when he enters his loft and tells her his name is Mr. Toles.

Despite watching him enter his own apartment, she STILL called the cops and they showed up at his door 30 minutes later.

After D’Arreion posted the videos to Facebook, her employer was quick to respond by saying, quote:

“[We] a minority-owned company that consists of employees and residents from many racial backgrounds.  We are proud of this fact and do not and never will stand for racism or racial profiling at our company.”

D’Arreion is still taking the high road though.  He’s urging people not to respond negatively and adds that he’s not mad at her and says he wishes her the best.

LEGALIZED WEED

With today’s legalization of recreational marijuana in Canada, police and provincial governments have been hard at work preparing for the “reefer madness” that might accompany it.

The president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police says that police departments across the country are “ready”, and that enforcing new laws around legal weed will be “a work in progress.”

The new laws allow adults 19 and over to possess up to 30 grams of legal marijuana and to grow up to four plants for personal use.  Growers and suppliers are required to be federally licensed. Retailers have to abide by provincial and municipal laws, which could vary widely across the country.  But sellers have also been ramping up for today.

While there may be as few as 100 physical locations across the country ready to sell cannabis today, there are numerous online portals which are bracing for a surge of orders.

And some provinces are getting in on the action as well.

One government pot shop is called the “Ontario Cannabis Store”.

Four Tips for Getting Out of Bed in the Morning

Here are four tips on how to get out of bed in the morning . . .

  1. Get enough sleep.  It’s the most obvious thing but it’s also the most difficult to put into practice.  But getting less than six hours of sleep will make it HARD to wake up, no matter what other steps you take.

  1. Move your alarm as far away as possible.  When you sleep with your phone or alarm right next to your bed, it’s too easy to just reach for it and hit snooze.  But if you put it on the other side of the room, you actually have to get out of bed to turn it off, which makes it harder to fall right back asleep.

  1. Use the “gradual method.”  That’s where you wake up 15 minutes earlier than you did the previous day, until you’re used to waking up at an earlier time.

  1. Use the “inverted snooze method.”  The inverted snooze method is where you use the 5 or 10 minutes you have for snooze time to treat yourself in any way you want, as long as you stay out of your bed.

So you can get up and watch funny videos on your phone, dance around your room, eat some food, anything that gets you pumped for the day.  But once the 10 minutes are up, it’s time to start your usual morning routine.

  1. The Boston Red Sox beat the Houston Astros 8-2 in Houston last night (October 16th), boosted by an eighth inning grand slam by Jackie Bradley Jr., to take a 2-1 lead in the American League Championship Series. Game 4 will be played tonight.

The Los Angeles Dodgers topped the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 last night in L.A., getting the victory on a 13th-inning single by Cody Bellinger to bring home the winning run. The National League Championship Series is now tied at 2 games apiece, with Game 5 set for this afternoon.

  1. Just like Roseanne said “The Conners” killed off her character last night by having her overdose on opioids.

  1. Google just announced it’s officially killing off its Google Plus social network next August.  And it makes sense, since it never really caught on and no one uses it now . . . but considering how HARD Google pushed it when it launched, it’s still kind of a surprise to see it go.

  1. What’s a zoo to do if Taylor Swift escapes from her enclosure? Not the singer, of course, but a one-year-old bongo calf named for the pop star.

The Sacramento Zoo said visitors spotted the animal outside her exhibit on Sunday afternoon (October 14th.) The zoo said visitors were ushered to a safe area at the front of the facility while staff worked to guide the escaped calf to a secure area. A zoo veterinarian said Taylor did not appear to have any serious injuries or complications from her brief escape. Officials are trying to figure out how she managed to get out of her enclosure.
