Cody Johnson On The Year He Was So Broke
Cody Johnson’s Christmas special airs on CMT tonight, and there’s a part where he talks about a December long ago when he and his wife Brandi were so broke ramen noodles were a “luxury.”
They’d just gone to his parents for dinner, and he put a $20 bill in a Christmas card before realizing it was the last $20 they had.
Then on their drive home, Merle Haggard’s song “If We Make It Through December” came on the radio.
He and Brandi started crying, but when they got home, he checked the mail and found his first two songwriting checks for $2,500 EACH.
Cody covered “If We Make It Through December” on his 2021 Christmas album, and performs it again tonight.
