Girl Who Grew Up Homeless and Got Pregnant in High School Became Valedictorian
A girl named Trameka Pope is graduating from Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago this week. And that alone is impressive, because she’s had a pretty rough go of it.
First, she and her family were homeless. Then she got pregnant in the eighth grade, and kept the baby. So the fact that she stayed in school through all of it is pretty incredible. But she isn’t just graduating . . . she’s the VALEDICTORIAN.
Somehow Trameka managed to get almost straight A’s, while also working at a grocery store . . . cheerleading . . . being a member of the National Honor Society . . . and doing a bunch of other extracurricular stuff.
She says she stayed motivated because of her daughter, and didn’t want to be another statistic.
She’s planning to get her PhD in social work, and she’s going to Western Illinois University this fall, which was one of 26 different colleges that accepted her.
And it sounds like she won’t have to worry about tuition, because she’s gotten over $600,000 in scholarships.
LOVE LOCKS LEAVING:
Monday the city of Paris, France began removing all the ‘love locks’ from the Pont des Arts bridge near the Louvre. For years, couples touring the City of Love have written their names on padlocks, blanketed Paris’ bridges with them, and then thrown the keys in the River Seine.
The popular fad is said to symbolize undying love. However, officials say the practice has become dangerous. Part of the Pont des Arts actually collapsed under the weight of the locks last year. So now almost a million padlocks, weighing 45 tons, are being cut off and the metal railings are being covered with padlock-proof glass panels that are easy to clean of graffiti. Other bridges at risk will also eventually get the treatment.– “Wall Street Journal”
★ And ‘Archie’ & the gang are hanging up their speech bubbles and calling it a day with a final comic book issue today … sorta. One of the longest-running series since the dawn of the modern comic book in 1867, today’s final release will reference longtime running gags and nods to the original “Archie” comics of the 1940s & ’50s. For avid collectors, there are 6 different covers. This, of course, is all in preparation for the upcoming total redesign of the series. The company has decided to start over from scratch with another ‘new’ series beginning with “Archie #1″. – Canoe.ca
Woman Comes Home to a Stranger Passed Out in Her Bed and Takes a Selfie With Him
A woman in Dubai named Rym Ben Slimane came home last week and found a strange man had broken into her apartment, and was SLEEPING in her bed.
And her first instinct was . . . to take a SELFIE with him. Once she had her picture, THEN she called the cops.
When they got there, they figured out that he wasn’t planning to rob the place . . . he was just drunk and tired. But he was arrested anyway, and he’s facing charges for trespassing.
Unfortunately for him, more charges could be coming, since the United Arab Emirates operates under Muslim laws . . . so drinking alcohol and sharing a bed with a woman who’s not your wife are both illegal.

HUNTER HAYES WANTS FANS TO ROLL THEIR ‘SLEEVESUP’ (06/01/2015)
Hunter Hayes is partnering with the American Red Cross to help saves lives through blood donation. This summer, during the Wheels Up tour with Lady Antebellum and Sam Hunt, Hunter will encourage at least 21,000 of his fans to pledge to donate blood or platelets through his personal Hunter Hayes SleevesUp virtual blood drive. The singer wants 21,000 of his fans to join him in this gift of donating in honor of his new single, “21.”
Hunter said, “There is a line in my new single, 21, that says ‘life ain’t long enough. I wanted to team with the American Red Cross to honor and celebrate all of those individuals who are constantly giving back and trying to make lives longer and better for sick patients around the country.”
Through a special hashtag, #HH21SleevesUp, Hunter will honor and recognize fans who have blood donation and recipient stories with special concert tickets and the opportunity to honor loved ones by personally writing their names on a unique guitar donated by Martin Guitars. In an effort to live out his own personal life motto of turning “fear into purpose,” Hunter will also face his own fear of needles and donate blood.
Fans can pledge to donate through Hunter’s virtual blood drive page by visiting rcblood.org/Hunter all through the summer months, which is among the most challenging times of year for blood donations due to many regular donors traveling and being on vacation.

His new reality series, “Knock Knock Live”, premieres July 21st. And the premise is sort of like “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”: Someone knocks on a door and the unsuspecting person answering it gets the chance to win cash, meet famous people, or live their dream. Seacrest serves as an executive producer of the FOX-TV show. He’s the host, but won’t actually be knocking on any doors. – USAToday.com
★ Jon Stewart and “The Daily Show”, the Comedy Central powerhouse he’s soon to depart, have initiated a 5-week boot camp for military veterans who want to work … in show biz. The project has been quietly developed over 3 years and is already paying off in jobs for vets. A longtime lampooner of America’s wars, Stewart is at the same time a big supporter of veterans, making hospital visits and doing tours of bases. As to providing vets with free training in other fields, Stewart says: “Please steal our idea.” – “New York Times”
