LIFESTYLE

Another doomsday prediction about climate change, here.  This one just as scary as that one last week that said we will be facing things like extreme drought, wildfires, floods and food shortages if we don’t get our act together.

A study published in the journal Nature Plants says that global warming will lead to significant decreases in barley crop yields, causing beer shortages and sharp rises in the price of beer.  In some countries, that could mean the price of a pint could increase by as much as three times.  Barley is one of the main ingredients in the manufacture of the golden nectar, and is very sensitive to extreme heat and drought.

Big Bird is packing it in.  Caroll Spinney, one of the original puppeteers who created “Sesame Street” with Jim Henson, is officially retiring. 84-year-old Spinney said that yesterday will be his last time shooting the iconic children’s show, where he has played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since 1969.

He says the roles “Have given me great joy, led me to my true calling and created a lifetime of memories that I will cherish forever.” Spinney actually stopped wearing the Big Bird suit a few years ago, but continued to provide the voices for both characters. Matt Vogel, who also plays Kermit the Frog, will take over as Big Bird.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A 10-year-old kid in San Francisco named Niall McDermott just finished a pretty impressive feat this past Sunday.

His grandfather has been battling lung cancer, and he wanted to do something to support him.

So Niall challenged himself to run FIFTY 5K races in fifty days.

His parents talked to his doctor about it first, and told Niall he could stop whenever he wanted to.  They figured he’d quit at some point, and didn’t think he’d actually do all 50 races.  But he did.

He ran his first 5K at the end of August . . . ran his 50th in San Francisco on Sunday . . . and raised about FOUR GRAND for cancer research in the process.

He says he got the idea after he saw a documentary called IRON COWBOY, about a guy who did 50 Ironman races in 50 days.

Nice People More Likely to Go Bankrupt, Study Finds

Researchers from the Columbia Business School say that kinder individuals are more prone to financial hardships because money simply isn’t as important to them.

We were interested in understanding whether having a nice personality — what academics in personality research describe as agreeableness — was related to negative financial outcomes,” explains the lead author. “Previous research suggested that agreeableness was associated with lower credit scores and income. We wanted to better understand why nice guys seem to finish last.”

They studied data from more than 3 million people to learn about their savings, debt, level of agreeableness, and overall view of money.

“We found that agreeableness was associated with indicators of financial hardship, including lower savings, higher debt and higher default rates,”. “This relationship appears to be driven by the fact that agreeable people simply care less about money and therefore are at higher risk of money mismanagement.”

Life Finally Gets Easier at Age 44 . . . Allegedly

According to a new study, there IS a point where life gets EASIER.  And that point is . . . age 44.

The study found that people stress out in their 20s over things like finding a job, saving money, and dating . . . and people stress in their 30s over things like moving up in a career and starting a family.

Then in your early 40s, you worry about things like finding a work-life balance, your relatives getting older, and trying to plan for the future.

But at 44?  Then things finally turn around, you get all that other stuff squared away, and you can start relaxing and enjoying your life.

According to the study, people’s favorite things about their 40s are going on nice vacations . . . earning good money . . . having a nice car . . . and knowing what’s worth worrying about.

The best thing about being your 50s is you stop worrying too much about what people think about you . . . and the best thing about being in your 60s is retiring and getting to enjoy your paid-off house and your grandkids.

Eric Church’s Son Inspired Him to Write His Song “Monsters”

Most songs remind us of a certain time in our lives.  And sometimes they’ll even bring us back to a specific moment.  Well, here’s something I never even thought of.

ERIC CHURCH talked about his song “Monsters”, which is on his “Desperate Man” album.

He said, QUOTE, “I think after Vegas [it] closet light dimmer wasn’t bright enough and he wanted it brighter.

“And when I went in and made it a little brighter and he said, ‘That’s good, that’s good, that’s perfect.’  And it wasn’t much, but that stuck with me.  This is pre-writing the song but that stuck with me that’s kind of all he needed was just more light.”

Eric added this in the caption:  “It will always be a song that I think about where I was at that time in my life, where my kids were, and just how that little bit of light is what made the difference.”  (Boone turned 7 last week.)

FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE MAKE A POINT TO PAY IT FORWARD

Florida Georgia Line just scored their latest Number One song with “Simple,” and while they are definitely focused on their future, they’re also focused on repaying the kindness and generosity they were shown early in their career to other artists who are just getting started.

Morgan Wallen got some help from the duo on his debut chart-topping single, “Up Down,” which was celebrated with a Number One party in Nashville earlier this week. FGL’s Tyler Hubbard was in attendance.

The duo plans to to announce details of their next album and a 2019 tour in the coming weeks.
